Chapter 8: The Trial of Truth

Chapter 8: The Trial of Truth

The fingerprint report slipped from Christopher Pierce's hand and landed on the wet wooden floor of the gazebo.
Rain continued to fall outside.
Neither Christopher nor Detective Marcus Doyle moved.
Richard Nolan.
For eighteen years, Richard had been more than the head of security.
He had attended Christopher's father's funeral.
He had taught Emma how to ride a bicycle.
He had shared countless family dinners.
He knew every corner of Pierce Manor.
Every security code.
Every hidden entrance.
If Richard had been working against them all along...
Then no one inside the estate had ever truly been safe.
Christopher slowly picked up the report.
"Where is he?"
Doyle's expression darkened.
"He escaped."
Christopher looked up sharply.
"What?"
"The officers transporting him were ambushed."
"Two deputies were injured."
"Richard disappeared."
Christopher closed his eyes.
Of course he had.
A man who had secretly sabotaged cameras, planted surveillance equipment, and helped orchestrate kidnappings would never leave a trail unless he wanted to.
"He won't run forever," Christopher said quietly.
Doyle nodded.
"No."
"But we have another problem."
Christopher frowned.
"What now?"
The detective handed him a second folder.
"The Pierce Board of Directors called an emergency meeting."
Christopher opened the file.
The meeting was scheduled for nine o'clock the next morning.
Its purpose was printed in bold letters.
Motion to Remove Christopher Pierce as Chief Executive Officer.
He stared at the page.
"My own board?"
Doyle folded his arms.
"Half of them were appointed by your mother."
Christopher almost laughed.
Even after Emma's attempted murder...
Even after Juliette's arrest...
Estelle was still fighting for control.
Not with violence.
With power.
Exactly where she was strongest.
The next morning...
Pierce Tower rose above the city like a monument to wealth.
Television cameras crowded the entrance.
Reporters shouted questions as Christopher stepped out of his car.
"Mr. Pierce!"
"Is it true your fiancée attempted to kill your daughter?"
"Are you resigning today?"
"Is your company under criminal investigation?"
Christopher ignored every question.
Emma had wanted to come with him.
He refused.
She remained safely inside Pierce Manor under heavy police protection.
Or so he hoped.
Inside the executive boardroom, twelve directors waited.
At the head of the polished table sat Estelle Pierce.
Elegant.
Calm.
Completely composed.
She smiled as Christopher entered.
"You're late."
Christopher took his seat.
"I'm exactly on time."
Estelle folded her hands.
"We have much to discuss."
One director cleared his throat.
"The purpose of today's meeting is the future stability of Pierce Technologies."
Christopher looked around the room.
Most of the directors avoided eye contact.
Fear.
Not loyalty.
Fear.
Estelle spoke first.
"My son has become emotionally compromised."
She slid several newspapers across the table.
Headlines covered the front pages.
CEO'S FAMILY SCANDAL.
CHILD ENDANGERMENT INVESTIGATION.
PIERCE EMPIRE IN CRISIS.
She continued calmly.
"The shareholders deserve stable leadership."
Christopher smiled.
"Amazing."
The room grew quiet.
"My daughter nearly dies."
"My fiancée attempts murder."
"My mother's voice appears on a recording discussing that murder."
"And your greatest concern..."
He looked directly at Estelle.
"...is the company's stock price."
Her expression never changed.
"You are proving my point."
Christopher slowly stood.
"No."
"I'm exposing yours."
He placed Rachel's legal documents onto the conference table.
"The board deserves the truth."
Estelle's eyes narrowed.
"What is this?"
Christopher answered loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"The amended Pierce Family Trust."
Several directors frowned.
Christopher continued.
"My grandfather legally named his eldest biological grandchild as future controlling beneficiary."
Murmurs filled the room.
One director quickly skimmed the document.
"This appears genuine."
"It is."
Christopher looked around the table.
"My daughter Emma is that child."
Silence.
Utter silence.
For years the board believed Emma had simply been an orphan Christopher had taken into his home.
Now everything changed.
Estelle spoke coldly.
"These papers haven't been authenticated."
Christopher smiled slightly.
"They already have."
The conference room doors opened.
A woman in a navy suit walked inside carrying a briefcase.
Detective Doyle followed behind her.
Christopher introduced her.
"Everyone..."
"This is Margaret Ellis."
"The independent attorney Rachel Monroe hired eight years ago."
Estelle's face lost its color.
"You..."
Margaret nodded calmly.
"Yes."
"I've been alive the entire time."
Christopher watched his mother's composure begin to crack.
Margaret placed certified copies of every legal document before the directors.
"I've spent eight years under witness protection."
Gasps echoed around the room.
She continued.
"Rachel Monroe anticipated attempts to silence everyone involved."
Christopher noticed Estelle's fingers tightening around her pen.
Margaret spoke clearly.
"The trust amendment is genuine."
"So is Emma Pierce's legal status as Christopher Pierce's biological daughter."
One director slowly removed his glasses.
"My God."
Another looked directly at Estelle.
"You knew?"
Estelle remained silent.
Christopher stepped closer.
"My mother concealed the truth."
"She endangered my daughter."
"And according to new evidence..."
He paused.
"...she may also be connected to Rachel Monroe's death."
The room erupted.
At that exact moment...
Miles away...
Emma sat in the Pierce Manor library drawing pictures with Yvette.
She had finally begun smiling again.
Yvette looked over her shoulder.
"What are you drawing?"
Emma smiled.
"Our family."
Yvette looked at the picture.
Christopher.
Emma.
Rachel.
And...
An elderly woman holding Emma's hand.
Yvette blinked.
"Who's she?"
Emma pointed.
"You."
Yvette covered her mouth.
"Oh, sweetheart..."
Emma hugged her.
"You're family too."
Tears filled Yvette's eyes.
She had waited thirty years to hear words like that.
Neither of them noticed the delivery truck stopping outside the front gates.
The driver wore the uniform of a well-known flower company.
He carried a large white box.
The guard approached him.
"Delivery for Pierce Manor."
The guard checked the paperwork.
Everything appeared genuine.
He opened the gate.
The truck entered.
Back at Pierce Tower...
Detective Doyle's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Christopher looked over.
"What happened?"
Doyle lowered the phone slowly.
"There has been a security breach at the manor."
Christopher's blood froze.
"Emma."
Doyle nodded.
Christopher ran.
Ignoring the reporters.
Ignoring the board.
Ignoring everyone.
He raced toward the elevators.
Meanwhile...
The flower delivery driver smiled politely as Yvette opened the front door.
"Special delivery."
Yvette frowned.
"We didn't order flowers."
"They're anonymous."
He handed over the large white box.
Yvette accepted it cautiously.
The driver tipped his hat.
"Have a wonderful day."
He walked away.
Yvette carried the box into the library.
Emma clapped happily.
"Flowers!"
Yvette reached for the ribbon.
Something made her pause.
The box felt unusually heavy.
Too heavy for flowers.
She carefully lifted the lid.
Inside...
There were no flowers.
Only dozens of shredded legal documents.
Rachel's handwriting covered every torn page.
Yvette gasped.
At the bottom lay a digital voice recorder.
It suddenly switched on by itself.
Richard Nolan's voice filled the library.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I'm already dead."
Emma looked confused.
Yvette stared in horror.
Richard continued.
"I wasn't the mastermind."
"I only followed orders."
The recording crackled.
Then another voice interrupted.
Cold.
Controlled.
Unmistakable.
Estelle Pierce.
"Loose ends don't deserve retirement."
A gunshot echoed through the recording.
Emma screamed.
The recorder went silent.
Yvette's hands shook violently.
Christopher burst through the front doors seconds later.
He ran into the library.
"Emma!"
She threw herself into his arms.
"I'm here."
Christopher looked toward the open box.
Yvette handed him the recorder without speaking.
He pressed Play again.
This time everyone listened until the very end.
After several seconds of static...
A final sentence emerged.
Richard's weak voice whispered,
"Search... the chapel..."
"...beneath... the angel..."
The recording ended forever.
Detective Doyle slowly looked up.
"The family chapel."
Christopher nodded.
His face had become harder than ever before.
"If Richard died to leave that message..."
"...then whatever is hidden beneath that angel statue..."
"...is what they've been killing to protect."
Outside, across the estate, Estelle Pierce's private chapel stood silently beneath darkening skies.
For generations it had been a place of prayer.
By nightfall...
Christopher was about to discover...
May you like
It had also become a tomb.
