Chapter 6: The Girl Who Vanished

Christopher Pierce did not remember climbing the stairs.

One second he stood at the bottom of the grand staircase.

The next, he was running down the second-floor hallway, his heart pounding so violently it drowned out every other sound.

"Emma!"

His voice echoed through Pierce Manor.

No answer.

He burst into her bedroom.

The blankets had been thrown aside.

Her favorite stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

The window was open.

The curtains fluttered wildly in the night wind.

Christopher's blood ran cold.

"No..."

Yvette rushed into the room moments later.

"Christopher!"

He turned toward her, his face pale.

"She was right here."

"I only left for a minute."

"You couldn't have known," Christopher said.

But his voice lacked conviction.

Someone had taken Emma.

Or had they?

Detective Marcus Doyle arrived with two officers.

"No one leaves this estate," he ordered.

"Lock every gate."

"Search every building."

"Check every camera."

The officers scattered.

Christopher climbed through the open window onto the stone balcony.

The rain had stopped, leaving the floor damp.

Flashlights swept across the gardens below.

Then Christopher noticed something.

Tiny footprints.

Bare feet.

They weren't leading away from the room.

They were leading... toward it.

He crouched lower.

"Detective."

Doyle joined him.

"What is it?"

Christopher pointed.

"These are Emma's."

The detective examined them carefully.

"You're right."

"But look."

Beside the child's footprints were much larger boot prints.

The larger prints stopped at the balcony railing.

Emma's continued into the bedroom.

Christopher frowned.

"She came back inside."

Doyle looked around the room.

"So if she wasn't taken through the window..."

Christopher slowly turned toward the hallway.

"...then she's still inside the house."

"Search every room!"

Christopher shouted.

"No exceptions."

Servants, officers, and security guards spread through the mansion.

The enormous estate suddenly became a maze of opening doors and echoing footsteps.

Basement.

Wine cellar.

Guest suites.

Attic.

Library.

Kitchen.

Nothing.

Emma had disappeared.

Yvette stood in the hallway, fighting tears.

"This is my fault."

Christopher gently held her shoulders.

"No."

"They planned this."

She looked at him.

"They're trying to break you."

Christopher's jaw tightened.

"They won't."

Fifteen minutes later...

Richard Nolan, the head of security, rushed toward them.

"Sir!"

"I found something."

He led Christopher to the mansion's security control room.

The emergency generator had restored power.

Most surveillance footage had returned.

Except for one camera.

The library.

"It stopped recording exactly forty-seven seconds before the blackout."

Christopher narrowed his eyes.

"Play the previous footage."

Richard rewound the video.

Emma appeared on screen.

She was sitting quietly in the library, reading one of Rachel's old storybooks.

Then...

She looked up.

Not frightened.

Not surprised.

She smiled.

Christopher leaned closer.

Someone stood just outside the camera's frame.

Emma recognized whoever it was.

The little girl closed her book and walked toward them willingly.

The video froze.

Static filled the screen.

Then darkness.

Christopher felt a chill run down his spine.

"She knew them."

Doyle nodded.

"She trusted them."

At that same moment...

A faint voice echoed through one of the mansion's heating vents.

"...Daddy..."

Christopher froze.

"Did you hear that?"

Everyone became silent.

Again.

"...Daddy..."

It was Emma.

Christopher ran toward the sound.

The voice seemed to come from the old east wing.

The abandoned part of the estate that had been closed for years.

Dust covered every hallway.

Furniture lay beneath white sheets.

Portraits of long-dead Pierces stared from the walls.

"Emma!"

"I'm here!"

Her tiny voice answered.

"I'm scared!"

Christopher followed the sound until he reached a narrow wooden door hidden behind an antique grandfather clock.

He had lived in Pierce Manor his entire life.

He had never noticed the door.

Richard looked surprised.

"That passage isn't on the blueprints."

Christopher pulled the handle.

Locked.

He didn't hesitate.

One powerful kick splintered the old wood.

The hidden passage beyond was dark and narrow.

Cold air drifted upward.

Christopher grabbed a flashlight.

He entered first.

The tunnel descended beneath the mansion.

Stone walls surrounded them.

It looked ancient.

Built decades earlier.

Perhaps even before Christopher was born.

Emma's cries became louder.

"Daddy!"

"I'm coming!"

He hurried through the twisting corridor until he reached a small underground room.

There...

Curled against the wall...

Emma sat hugging her knees.

The moment she saw Christopher, she burst into tears.

"Daddy!"

Christopher rushed forward and pulled her into his arms.

"I've got you."

"I've got you."

She clung to him desperately.

"I thought you couldn't find me."

He kissed her forehead.

"I'll always find you."

Always.

Detective Doyle searched the room with his flashlight.

"No windows."

"No other exits."

Christopher looked at Emma.

"What happened?"

She wiped away tears.

"The nice man said Mommy left me a surprise."

Christopher's heart sank.

"What nice man?"

"He had Grandpa's watch."

"The Pierce watch?"

Emma nodded.

"He said he worked here."

Christopher exchanged a worried glance with Doyle.

Someone wearing the Pierce family watch.

Again.

The circle was growing smaller.

As officers searched the underground chamber, Richard called from the far corner.

"Sir..."

"You should see this."

Hidden beneath an old canvas tarp stood a steel filing cabinet.

Its lock had rusted away years earlier.

Inside were dozens of yellowed folders.

Construction plans.

Family correspondence.

Architectural drawings.

One folder immediately caught Christopher's attention.

It carried his father's handwriting.

Emergency Access Routes

Christopher opened it.

Folded inside was the complete map of Pierce Manor.

Including passages no modern blueprint showed.

Secret staircases.

Hidden tunnels.

Private rooms.

The underground chamber where Emma had been found.

Christopher stared at the final page.

A handwritten note rested at the bottom.

These passages must remain hidden.

Only members of the Pierce Executive Council should know they exist.

Detective Doyle frowned.

"Executive Council?"

Christopher nodded slowly.

"It was an unofficial family committee."

"My grandfather."

"My father."

"My mother."

"And..."

He stopped speaking.

"And who?"

Christopher looked at the list.

His face changed.

"There were five members."

"Who's the fifth?"

Christopher whispered the name.

"Arthur Blackwell."

Yvette frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

Christopher looked disturbed.

"Neither have I."

Back upstairs...

Emma refused to let go of Christopher's hand.

She sat wrapped in a blanket beside the fireplace while detectives continued searching the estate.

Christopher knelt before her.

"I need you to think carefully."

"The man who spoke to you..."

"What did he look like?"

Emma frowned.

"I couldn't see."

"He wore a hat."

"And glasses."

"But..."

She hesitated.

Christopher smiled gently.

"It's okay."

"You can tell me."

"He smelled like lemons."

Yvette suddenly looked up.

"Lemons?"

Emma nodded.

"The same smell as Grandpa."

Christopher frowned.

"My father?"

Yvette slowly stood.

"There was only one person in this house who always wore lemon cologne."

Christopher waited.

She answered quietly.

"Arthur Blackwell."

The name hit Christopher like a hammer.

"You know him?"

Yvette nodded.

"He was your father's closest friend."

"He helped build Pierce Technologies."

Christopher stared.

"Why has no one ever mentioned him?"

Yvette looked toward the floor.

"Because..."

"Your mother fired him the week after your father's funeral."

"And then..."

"He disappeared."

The room fell silent.

Christopher's mind raced.

Rachel mentioned hidden evidence.

His father's diary warned about Estelle.

Arthur Blackwell vanished.

Daniel Harper vanished.

Now someone wearing the Pierce family watch had lured Emma into a secret tunnel.

This wasn't random.

Someone was systematically erasing people connected to the truth.

Just then, Detective Doyle's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression hardened.

"What?"

Christopher watched him carefully.

Doyle ended the call.

"The forensic lab finished examining the flash drive from the greenhouse."

"And?"

"They recovered deleted files."

Christopher stepped closer.

"What files?"

The detective swallowed.

"Security footage."

Christopher frowned.

"From where?"

Doyle looked directly into his eyes.

"Rachel Monroe's car."

Christopher stopped breathing.

"There was a hidden dashboard camera."

Doyle nodded.

"And it recorded the entire drive..."

"...on the day Rachel died."

The room became deathly silent.

"If the video survived..."

Christopher whispered.

"...then we may finally learn whether Rachel's death was really an accident."

Outside the mansion, thunder rolled across the night sky once more.

Neither Christopher nor Emma noticed the black sedan parked beyond the estate gates.

Inside, a gray-haired man watched Pierce Manor through binoculars.

His eyes filled with emotion as he saw Emma safely back in her father's arms.

He quietly whispered to himself.

"Rachel..."

"I couldn't protect you."

"But I swear..."

"I'll protect your little girl."

Then he started the engine.

May you like

Unaware that two black SUVs had already begun following him through the darkness.
