Chapter 5: The Shadow Inside Pierce Manor

Christopher Pierce stared at the photograph until his hands began to shake.

Emma.

Laughing in the rose garden.

The picture had been taken only hours earlier.

Someone had been close enough to capture the smile on her face.

Close enough to count the freckles on her cheeks.

Close enough...

To kill her.

The message on the back echoed in his mind.

We missed once. We won't miss again.

A cold wave of anger washed over him.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Anger.

For too many years he had believed the danger was outside his home.

Now he understood the truth.

The danger had always lived inside it.

He immediately called Detective Marcus Doyle.

"I need you here."

"What happened?"

Christopher photographed the threatening note with his phone.

"Someone left a death threat outside Emma's bedroom."

Silence.

Then Doyle replied,

"Don't touch anything else. I'm on my way."

Within thirty minutes, police vehicles surrounded Pierce Manor once again.

Crime scene technicians dusted the envelope for fingerprints.

The hallway outside Emma's room was sealed off.

Every servant was questioned.

Every security camera was collected.

Christopher watched from the library while Emma slept upstairs under Yvette's care.

Detective Doyle approached carrying a tablet.

"I've reviewed the security footage."

"And?"

"That's the problem."

Christopher frowned.

"There isn't any."

"What do you mean?"

"The cameras covering the east hallway were disabled."

"For how long?"

"Exactly fourteen minutes."

Christopher's jaw tightened.

"Long enough."

Doyle nodded.

"Long enough."

The mansion's security chief, Richard Nolan, arrived moments later.

He had worked for the Pierce family for nearly eighteen years.

Christopher had trusted him completely.

Richard looked genuinely confused.

"I don't understand."

"Our system has backup power."

"It shouldn't be possible."

Doyle folded his arms.

"But it happened."

Richard requested permission to inspect the control room himself.

Christopher agreed.

Together they descended into the estate's underground security center.

Rows of monitors displayed every corner of the mansion.

Every hallway.

Every gate.

Every garden.

Except...

Camera 17.

Emma's hallway.

Its screen remained black.

Richard opened the control panel.

His face immediately changed.

"What is it?"

He swallowed.

"This wasn't a power failure."

Christopher stepped closer.

"Then what?"

Richard pointed toward a tiny circuit board.

"Someone physically removed the backup chip."

Doyle narrowed his eyes.

"Would an outsider know where to find it?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"Only senior security personnel..."

"...or family members."

The room fell silent.

Christopher slowly looked toward the mansion above them.

Someone with trusted access had helped the attacker.

Meanwhile...

Yvette sat beside Emma's bed.

The little girl slept peacefully for the first time since the accident.

Her breathing was calm.

Her favorite stuffed rabbit rested beneath one arm.

Yvette smiled softly.

Rachel had once said Emma only slept deeply when she felt safe.

Yvette gently brushed a strand of hair away from the child's face.

"I'm going to keep my promise."

She whispered it almost like a prayer.

Then she noticed something.

The bedroom window.

It was open.

Only a few inches.

But she distinctly remembered closing it earlier.

Yvette stood.

She walked toward the curtains.

Outside...

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Still...

She felt watched.

Just as she reached to close the window...

She noticed muddy footprints on the stone balcony.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had stood outside Emma's room.

Very recently.

Yvette's blood ran cold.

She quietly locked the window before rushing downstairs.

Christopher and Detective Doyle examined the footprints less than five minutes later.

One officer photographed every mark.

Another collected soil samples.

Doyle looked over the balcony railing.

"No ladder."

Christopher frowned.

"Then how did they get here?"

Richard answered quietly.

"The balcony connects to the old ivy wall."

Christopher looked down.

Dense vines climbed from the gardens to the second floor.

An experienced climber could easily reach Emma's room unnoticed.

Doyle looked toward the surrounding trees.

"They've been watching."

Christopher nodded.

"For longer than we realize."

Later that evening...

Forensic technicians returned with preliminary results.

The threatening envelope carried no fingerprints.

No DNA.

Professional.

However...

The photograph itself revealed something unexpected.

One technician enlarged the image.

Christopher leaned closer.

Behind Emma...

Barely visible through the garden hedge...

Was the reflection of a man's wristwatch in the afternoon sunlight.

Only a tiny flash.

But enough.

The technician zoomed in further.

Christopher stared.

The watch wasn't ordinary.

It carried the engraved Pierce family crest.

Detective Doyle looked at him.

"How many people own one?"

Christopher answered immediately.

"They're never sold."

"They're gifts."

"Only direct members of the Pierce family receive them."

Doyle slowly closed the file.

"So whoever took this picture..."

"...belongs to your family."

That same night...

Christopher gathered every remaining servant inside the grand dining room.

Twenty-three people stood silently.

Some had served the family for decades.

Others had joined only recently.

Christopher spoke calmly.

"If anyone knows something..."

"...this is your chance."

No one answered.

The silence felt endless.

Then...

A timid voice came from the back.

It belonged to Lily.

The youngest housemaid.

Only nineteen years old.

She nervously raised her hand.

"I saw someone."

Every head turned.

Christopher stepped closer.

"When?"

"This afternoon."

"Near the gardens."

"Who?"

She swallowed hard.

"I couldn't see his face."

"He wore black gloves."

"And?"

"He came from the old greenhouse."

Christopher exchanged a glance with Doyle.

The greenhouse.

Almost no one visited it anymore.

Rachel used to love that place.

After her death...

It had remained abandoned.

Christopher turned immediately.

"We're going there."

Flashlights cut through the darkness as officers searched the old greenhouse.

Broken glass covered the floor.

Dead vines hung from rusted beams.

Everything looked forgotten.

Until Detective Doyle noticed a faint light beneath one workbench.

He crouched.

"There."

Christopher helped lift the heavy table aside.

Hidden underneath...

Was a brand-new metal case.

Locked.

Professional.

Doyle carefully opened it.

Inside...

There were no weapons.

No money.

Only surveillance equipment.

High-powered cameras.

Listening devices.

Memory cards.

Maps of Pierce Manor.

And dozens...

Hundreds...

Of photographs.

Christopher began turning them over one by one.

Emma sleeping.

Emma eating breakfast.

Emma reading books.

Emma crying after Christopher scolded her months earlier.

Emma walking alone in the gardens.

Emma holding Yvette's hand.

Every movement.

Every day.

Every week.

Someone had been documenting Emma's entire life.

For months.

Maybe years.

Yvette suddenly gasped.

Christopher looked up.

"What?"

She pointed toward the final photograph.

It showed Rachel Monroe.

Standing in the very same greenhouse.

Eight years earlier.

The picture had been taken only hours before her death.

On the back...

Someone had written three chilling words.

She Knew First.

Christopher's breathing became shallow.

Rachel had discovered something here.

Something important enough to get her killed.

Detective Doyle carefully searched the rest of the case.

Beneath the photographs lay another object.

A flash drive.

Plain black.

No label.

He handed it to Christopher.

"We'll examine it."

Christopher shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Rachel's old greenhouse.

"If this belonged to Rachel..."

"...she wanted me to see it first."

Doyle considered arguing.

Instead...

He nodded.

"Then let's do it together."

Back inside the mansion, Richard connected the flash drive to an isolated laptop.

A single folder appeared.

Its title read:

PIERCE FOUNDATION PROJECT

Christopher frowned.

"That's one of our charitable organizations."

He opened the folder.

At first, it appeared to contain nothing but financial records.

Donation receipts.

Property purchases.

Corporate transfers.

Then Yvette noticed one spreadsheet.

The numbers didn't add up.

Millions of dollars had been transferred repeatedly into shell companies.

The recipient names meant nothing.

Until Christopher reached the final page.

There...

Hidden inside the accounting records...

Was a handwritten note scanned into the file.

Rachel's handwriting.

Only one sentence.

Follow the money, Christopher. It doesn't lead to business. It leads to murder.

At that exact moment...

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Total darkness swallowed the room.

Emma screamed upstairs.

Christopher ran.

He reached the staircase just as emergency lights flickered on.

His heart nearly stopped.

Emma's bedroom door...

Was wide open.

And her bed...

May you like

Was empty.
