Chapter 7 - The Contract Marriage

I sat frozen, staring at the most powerful man in New York offering me a marriage of convenience.

"Julian... you don't have to do this," I stammered, my heart beating frantically against my ribs. "We can fight them in court with your lawyers—"

"I don't want to fight a drawn-out battle where Leo's future hangs in the balance for years," Julian interrupted gently. "And it isn't just about Leo, Elena."

He squeezed my hands gently. "In the three months you’ve been here, you brought warmth back into a house that felt like a cold tomb. You healed my son. You protected him with your life when Richard broke in. Maya feels like my own daughter. I am offering you total financial security, my name, my protection, and half of my personal estate."

"And what about us?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Is this just a contract?"

Julian looked down at our joined hands, a faint, vulnerable expression crossing his rugged features. "It starts as a contract to protect our children. But if you give me time... I hope to earn your heart for real."

Three days later, we were married in a private, legal ceremony at the Long Island courthouse.

There were no massive media crowds or elaborate dresses. I wore a simple, elegant ivory silk dress, and Julian wore a custom dark suit. Maya stood beside us wearing a little floral ring-bearer dress, holding baby Leo in her lap.

When the judge pronounced us husband and wife, Julian turned to me. He gently held my face in his hands and leaned down, placing a soft, lingering kiss on my lips that sent electric currents straight down to my toes.

It wasn't a fake kiss for the judge. It was a promise.

The next morning, the Montgomerys' legal team received our joint marriage filing and immediate counter-suit for malicious endangerment. When presented with the evidence that they had funded Richard's break-in, combined with Julian and my unified legal parental status, the Montgomerys surrendered entirely.

They signed away all custody claims to Leo in exchange for Julian dropping the criminal conspiracy charges against their family line.

We had won. Leo was safe forever.

That night, Julian moved his belongings into the master suite with me. But instead of pushing for intimacy, he treated me with the utmost respect, sleeping on his side of the massive bed, wrapping his arm around my waist, and pulling me close against his chest.

"Thank you, Mrs. Vance," he whispered against my neck before falling asleep.

For the first time in my life, I felt truly cherished.
