Chapter 4 - The Infiltration

The next two weeks were a blur of high-alert security and unexpected domestic warmth.

I accepted Julian’s job offer, taking over Leo's daily routine. Under my care, the baby blossomed—he gained weight, smiled constantly, and slept through the night. Maya loved her new home, quickly forming a sweet sibling-like bond with baby Leo.

Meanwhile, Julian was proving to be far more complex than his cold exterior suggested. Despite his massive corporate workload, he made a point to return to the estate every evening by 6:00 PM to eat dinner with Maya and me. He listened attentively as Maya babbled about her drawings, and he learned how to change diapers without causing a disaster.

Slowly, the icy barrier between us began to melt into a profound, unspoken trust.

However, the threat of Richard hung over us like a dark cloud. Julian’s head of security, Vance, kept a team stationed at every gate, but Richard had proven to be scarily resourceful.

On a rainy Thursday night, Julian was stuck in Manhattan attending an emergency board meeting. I was in the main mansion's nursery, rocking Leo to sleep, while Maya watched a cartoon downstairs in the private theater with a female bodyguard named Sarah.

Suddenly, the lights throughout the entire 15,000-square-foot mansion flickered and died.

Total darkness engulfed the room. The quiet hum of the air conditioning ceased, replaced by the heavy sound of pouring rain outside.

Instinctively, I pulled Leo tight against my chest. My heart began to hammer against my ribs. Backup generators should turn on in three seconds, I told myself.

Five seconds passed. Ten seconds. Nothing happened.

Then, down the hallway, I heard the faint, distinct sound of heavy boots crunching against broken glass near the conservatory entrance.

A cold surge of adrenaline shot through my veins. Someone had disabled the power grid and bypassed the outer perimeter security.

I quietly grabbed Leo, wrapped him in a dark blanket, and slipped into the nursery’s hidden panic space—a reinforced storage closet hidden behind a bookshelf that Julian had shown me on my first day.

I pulled the heavy oak door almost shut, leaving a tiny crack to peek through.

Footsteps echoed outside the nursery. Heavy, unhurried, terrifyingly familiar footsteps.

The door to the nursery creaked open. A beam from a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating a man wearing a wet raincoat and holding a silenced pistol.

He stepped into the room and pulled down his hood.

It was Richard.

"Elena?" Richard called out, his voice laced with sick, mocking affection. "I know you're in here, baby. You really thought a billionaire could protect you from me? I used to hunt in these woods, remember? A little bribe to a night guard, and I walked right through the front gate."

May you like

I squeezed my eyes shut, holding my hand over Leo's mouth to prevent him from making a single peep. My entire body shook with primal terror.

"Come out, Elena," Richard sneered, stepping closer to the crib. "We’re going home. You, me, and Maya. And if you don't come out in five seconds... I’m going to find where that rich bastard keeps his kid."
