Chapter 2 - The Shadow from Columbus

When the plane landed at JFK Airport in New York, I rushed back to premium economy to wake up Maya. She rubbed her sleepy eyes, holding her stuffed rabbit, completely oblivious to the drama that had unfolded twenty rows ahead of us.

"Mommy, are we at Cousin Sarah's house?" she asked softly.

"Almost, baby," I whispered, lifting her into my arms and retrieving our single suitcase.

As we walked down the jet bridge, I expected to fade into the chaotic New York crowd and take the subway to Queens, where my cousin Sarah had offered us her sofa. But as soon as we stepped into the terminal, two men in tailored suits stepped into our path.

"Mrs. Vance?" one of them asked politely. "Mr. Julian Vance requests your presence in the private arrivals lounge."

I pulled Maya closer. "Thank you, but we need to catch a train."

"It's not a request, ma'am—it's a matter of safety," a familiar deep voice called out.

Julian Vance stepped out from behind his security team, holding his sleeping baby in a front carrier. He looked sharper than ever, but his expression was grave.

"What's wrong?" I asked, my heart beginning to race.

Julian held up a tablet displaying a live security feed from Columbus, Ohio. My breath caught in my throat. Standing outside my old apartment building was Richard—my abusive ex-husband. He was screaming at my former neighbors, holding a metal crowbar in his hand.

"How did you get this?" I gasped, blood draining from my face.

"When you told me your name on the plane, my security team ran a background check," Julian explained calmly. "I don't trust strangers around my son, Leo. But what we found wasn't a threat from you—it was a threat to you. Your ex-husband tracked your credit card purchase for the flight. He knows you came to New York. He reached out to your cousin Sarah two hours ago."

I staggered back, clutching Maya. "Sarah? Did he hurt her?"

"No," Julian said, his voice cold as steel. "Because my team intercepted her and moved her to a secure location before Richard's associates could reach her apartment. Your cousin's couch is no longer safe, Elena. Richard has connections to local bookies in Queens."

The floor beneath my feet felt like it was tilting. I had spent my last $274 on these plane tickets. I had nowhere else to go, no money left, and a violent man hunting my daughter and me across state lines.

"Why are you doing this?" I sobbed quietly, trying not to scare Maya.

Julian stepped closer, his imposing presence suddenly feeling less like a threat and more like an impenetrable wall of protection.

"Because you saved my son when everyone else turned their backs," Julian said firmly. "And because nobody touches a child on my watch. You and your daughter are coming with me to my estate in Long Island. You will have a private guest house, twenty-four-hour security, and my legal team will file an immediate emergency restraining order against Richard."

I looked at Maya, who was fast asleep against my shoulder, and then at tiny Leo, who was sleeping soundly against Julian’s chest.

"Okay," I whispered, tears spilling over my cheeks. "Thank you."
