Chapter 5 - The Showdown

My blood ran cold. Richard stepped toward the bookshelf—the exact bookshelf hiding Leo and me.

Just as his hand reached for the handle, a blinding flash of red light exploded in the hallway outside, accompanied by the deafening roar of a security siren.

"Drop the weapon!" a voice thundered.

Julian stood in the doorway of the nursery. He wasn't wearing his suit. He was wearing dark tactical gear, flanked by three armed security officers. His gray eyes were burning with a lethal, murderous rage that made Richard look like an amateur.

Richard whirled around, raising his silenced pistol toward Julian. "Stay back, rich boy! I want my wife and child!"

"She is not your wife anymore," Julian spat, stepping directly into the line of fire without a hint of fear. "And you will never lay eyes on her again."

Before Richard could pull the trigger, Julian moved with terrifying speed. He lunged forward, grabbing Richard’s wrist and twisting it violently until the bone snapped with a sickening crack. The pistol clattered to the floor.

Richard screamed in pain, but Julian didn't stop. He slammed Richard against the hard oak wall, pressing his forearm against Richard’s throat until the abusive coward began to choke, his eyes bulging with fear.

"You put hands on a child," Julian growled into Richard’s ear, his voice sounding like gravel. "You hunted the woman who saved my family. You thought you could come into my house and threaten them?"

"Julian, stop!" I cried out, bursting from the hidden closet with Leo held tightly in my arms. "Don't ruin your life over him! The police are coming!"

Julian froze. He looked back at me, seeing Leo safe in my arms and the tears streaming down my face.

Slowly, the blind rage in Julian’s eyes receded. He released his grip on Richard’s throat, letting the groaning man slump to the floor in a heap. Vance, the chief bodyguard, instantly moved in, pinning Richard’s arms behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties.

Julian stepped over Richard’s broken body, approaching me with long, purposeful strides. Without saying a word, he pulled both Leo and me into his broad, solid chest.

I collapsed against him, sobbing hysterically into his shoulder as the adrenaline finally washed out of my system.

"You're safe," Julian whispered against my hair, his arms wrapping around us like impenetrable armor. "I swear on my life, Elena... he will never touch you again."
