Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

Julian’s Long Island estate was breathtaking. Surrounded by wrought-iron gates, lush pine forests, and high-tech security checkpoints, it felt less like a house and more like a fortress.

The guest house assigned to Maya and me was bigger than our entire apartment in Columbus. It had soft leather couches, a stocked kitchen, and a king-sized bed covered in plush white duvets. For the first time in three years, I locked the front door without feeling the constant, soul-crushing fear that Richard would kick it down.

That evening, a knock sounded at the door. I opened it to find Julian standing on the porch, wearing a soft gray sweater instead of his intimidating charcoal suit. He carried a sleeping Leo in his arms, alongside a thick stack of legal folders.

"May I come in?" he asked gently.

"Of course," I stepped aside.

We sat in the living room while Maya played happily with a box of brand-new toys that Julian’s staff had delivered earlier.

"My legal team filed for full custody protection for Maya in federal court today," Julian began, laying out the documents. "We utilized your medical records from the Columbus emergency room after the incident with the coffee table. Richard will be arrested the moment he steps foot into the state of New York."

I stared at him in disbelief. "I spent months trying to get the police in Ohio to take me seriously. How did you do this in six hours?"

"Money and influence," Julian replied bluntly. "When used correctly, they cut through bureaucracy."

He leaned back, watching as I picked up Leo, who had wiggled awake and begun softly whimpering. Instinctively, I held the baby close, soothing him with a gentle rocking motion. Leo instantly settled, resting his chubby cheek against my collarbone.

A rare, faint smile appeared on Julian’s lips. "He loves you. He hasn't bonded with a single nanny since my wife, Clara, passed."

"He misses his mother," I said gently. "Parenthood isn't something you can delegate to staff, Mr. Vance. Babies need heartbeats, not just schedules."

Julian’s gray eyes locked onto mine, a subtle intensity burning within them. "Call me Julian. And you're right. I've spent my whole life managing companies, assuming every problem could be solved by hiring the best professionals. But watching you with him on that plane... I realized how ignorant I was."

He cleared his throat, taking a deep breath. "Which brings me to my proposal."

"A proposal?" I asked cautiously.

"I want to hire you as Leo's full-time personal care specialist and live-in nurse," Julian said. "In exchange, I will provide a salary of $150,000 a year, full medical coverage, top-tier private schooling for Maya, and permanent legal immunity from your ex-husband."

My jaw dropped. "$150,000?"

"Consider it a starting offer," Julian said, standing up. "Think about it, Elena. You get safety for your daughter, and my son gets the care he desperately needs."

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed sharply. He answered it, and his expression instantly hardened back into the cold billionaire I had met on the plane.

"What do you mean he escaped?" Julian barked into the receiver. "Find him. Now."

He hung up and looked at me, his eyes dark with storm clouds. "Richard slipped past the police in Ohio. He’s on his way to New York."
