Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The snow outside was stained red as the battle finally came to an end. The Moretti syndicate was utterly broken, their leadership dismantled in a single night. Lorenzo stood in the dim corridor of the basement, chest heaving, his dark coat covered in snow and blood. Marco Moretti groaned on the floor, holding his shattered jaw, looking up at Lorenzo with pure terror. Lorenzo stepped forward, raising his weapon, ready to execute the man who had dared to put his daughter and Clara in danger.
"Lorenzo, stop!" Clara’s voice rang out through the hallway. She stepped between Lorenzo and the fallen mobster, holding her hands up. Lorenzo’s eyes were wild, consumed by the dark instincts of his profession. "He tried to kill you and Lily, Clara. He dies." Clara stepped closer, placing her soft hands directly onto his bloody, trembling fists, lowering his gun gently. "Look at me, Lorenzo. If you do this in front of us, if you let this darkness rule you, then this world will always own you. Lily needs a father, not a monster."
Lorenzo stared into Clara’s eyes, the cold, icy rage inside him suddenly melting away under her fierce, compassionate gaze. He looked past her to see Lily peeking out from the safe room door, holding her drawing, her blue eyes wide with hope. Lorenzo slowly lowered his weapon and handed it to Dante, who had regained consciousness and was standing nearby. "Hand Marco over to the federal authorities," Lorenzo ordered, his voice echoing with finality. "Expose all their operations. I'm done with the syndicate."
