Chapter 3 - Shadows Over the Sun

Three weeks passed. Lorenzo had recovered with uncanny speed, his return to the streets sending shockwaves through Chicago’s criminal hierarchy. The rival Moretti syndicate, who had ordered the hit on Lorenzo, was scrambling to understand how he had survived a mortal blood loss. Meanwhile, Clara continued her quiet life working as a graphic designer from her modest apartment, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around her. The only change in their lives was the unexpected discharge of all hospital debts, accompanied by a anonymous benefactor funding Lily’s private school education.
One afternoon, while picking Lily up from her school, Clara noticed a sleek, black sedan with tinted windows parked across the street. A tall man in a tailored dark suit stood beside it, watching them intently. Panic spiked in Clara's chest. She grabbed Lily’s hand and hurried toward their modest sedan, but as she reached the door, the man stepped forward, bowing respectfully. "Ms. Clara," Dante said calmly, extending an envelope. "My employer wishes to ensure your daughter’s ongoing well-being. He considers her gift a debt that can never fully be repaid." Clara refused to take the envelope, her eyes flashing with defensive pride. "We don't want money. It was a donation. Leave us alone."
Unbeknownst to Clara, a sniper from the Moretti faction was perched on a roof two blocks away, tracking Dante. The Morettis had discovered the donor's identity through a corrupt hospital insider, suspecting that anyone linked to Lorenzo’s survival could be used as leverage against him. As Clara opened the car door for Lily, a sudden, muffled sound cracked through the air. The side mirror of Clara’s car shattered into a thousand pieces. Dante reacted instantly, throwing his body over Clara and Lily, shoving them into the back of his armored vehicle as bullets began to rain down on the quiet street.
