Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Snow

Clara demanded that they be released immediately, but Lorenzo made it brutally clear that leaving the estate meant certain death. The Morettis now knew about Lily, and until the rival family was dismantled, Clara and her daughter were safest under his roof. Reluctantly, Clara accepted the golden cage, moving into the guest wing of the fortress. As days turned into weeks, an uneasy truce formed between Clara and Lorenzo. Clara saw the terrifying side of his world, but she also saw his quiet, fiercely protective side.
During late-night hours, when Lily was asleep, Clara found herself talking with Lorenzo in the library. She learned of his dark upbringing, raised in the brutal environment of organized crime, while he learned about her struggles as a young mother abandoned by her family when she got pregnant. Yet, a disturbing puzzle kept bothering Clara: the uncanny physical resemblance between Lorenzo and Lily. One evening, Clara confronted him directly. "Why do you have her eyes, Lorenzo? AB-negative mutation isn't just a coincidence, and neither are those eyes."
Lorenzo’s expression darkened. He opened a locked drawer and pulled out a yellowed folder containing old file records from a private fertility clinic twenty miles away—a clinic he had secretly funded years ago to hide his medical history. "Eight years ago, after a near-fatal shooting, I stored bone marrow and genetic material at a specialized clinic for medical research," Lorenzo revealed, his voice low and solemn. "I discovered last week that the clinic illegally auctioned off unlabelled genetic samples when they faced bankruptcy." Clara felt the world spin beneath her. The anonymous donor process she had gone through years ago wasn't an anonymous stranger; it was the man standing right in front of her.
