Chapter 4 - Into the Lion’s Den

The armored sedan roared away from the gunfire, tires screeching against the asphalt as Dante expertly navigated through downtown traffic. Clara held a screaming Lily tightly against her chest, her mind racing with absolute terror. "Who are you?! Who is trying to kill us?!" Clara demanded, her voice cracking with rage and fear. Dante kept his eyes on the rearview mirror, his hand resting on the weapon concealed beneath his jacket. "People who want to hurt my boss. And now, because your daughter saved his life, they view her as his weakness."
The car pulled into the underground garage of a massive, heavily fortified estate on the outskirts of the city. Security guards carrying automatic weapons lined the perimeter, standing at rigid attention. Clara was guided through grand, mahogany-lined corridors into a sprawling library. Standing by a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the rainy gardens was Lorenzo. He turned around slowly. Clara froze. The man standing before her possessed a presence so terrifyingly powerful it filled the room, but what caught her breath was his face—specifically, his eyes. They were the exact, piercing, sky-blue shade as Lily’s.
Lily, however, showed no fear. She peeked out from behind Clara’s coat, her eyes widening as she spotted the man. She pointed at the mahogany desk, where the crinkled, purple paper horse was sitting inside a pristine glass display frame. "You kept my picture!" Lily exclaimed, stepping out from her mother’s grip. Lorenzo looked down at the little girl, his cold, hardened demeanor wavering for a fraction of a second. "I keep things that are valuable," Lorenzo said softly, bending down on one knee to be at eye level with her. For the first time in his life, the ruthless boss felt a strange, unexplainable warmth in his chest.
