Chapter 10 - A Horse of a Different Color

One year later. The autumn sun shone brightly over a sprawling countryside estate in Vermont, hundreds of miles away from the violent streets of Chicago. Lorenzo had used his vast resources to completely dismantle his criminal empire, turning over crucial evidence to the government in exchange for full immunity and a complete retirement from the underworld. The Shadow of Chicago was dead; in his place was a man living a quiet, peaceful life.

In the backyard, a beautiful mahogany barn stood surrounded by golden trees. Lily, now nine years old, was laughing loudly as she led a magnificent white horse across the green grass. Walking beside her was Lorenzo, wearing a simple flannel shirt and jeans, holding the horse's reins with a gentle touch, his face softened by a genuine, relaxed smile. Clara stood on the porch of their new home, holding two mugs of hot cider, watching the two people who completed her world.

Lily stopped and looked up at Lorenzo, her piercing blue eyes identical to his. "Dad, can we paint the barn door purple?" she asked with a mischievous grin. Lorenzo laughed—a deep, joyful sound that Clara had once thought impossible for him—and kneeled down to wrap his arms around his daughter. "We can paint the whole barn purple if you want, sweetie," he replied softly. Clara walked down the porch steps and joined them, wrapping her arm around Lorenzo’s waist. He pulled her close, kissing her forehead as the evening sun dipped below the horizon, bathing their new life in a warm, golden light.
