Chapter 2 - Morning Light and Dark Shadows

The morning sun broke through the tall floor-to-ceiling glass of the West Wing, casting golden light across the dark walnut furniture. Daniel sat at the head of his long mahogany dining table—a table designed to seat sixteen guests comfortably. As usual, there was only one set of cutlery laid out, alongside a single mug of black coffee.

Maria Torres entered quietly through the pantry doors, her steps soft and measured. She wore her crisp gray housekeeper uniform, carrying a small tray with fresh fruit and toast. "Good morning, Mr. Hale," she said softly, maintaining her customary respectful distance.

Daniel looked up. His eyes were faintly bloodshot, but his posture was rigid once more. "Good morning, Maria." He paused, his fingers tracing the rim of his ceramic mug. "Maria... your daughter was up late last night."

Maria froze mid-step, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the tray. A flash of protective panic crossed her face. "I am so sorry, Mr. Hale. She sneaked out while I was folding linens in the basement laundry. I promise you it won't happen again. I'll ensure she stays strictly within our living quarters—"

"That isn't why I brought it up," Daniel interrupted softly. The unexpected gentleness in his tone stopped her cold. He looked down at his coffee. "She brought me a blanket."

Maria blinked, caught off guard. Before she could answer, the double oak doors of the grand foyer burst open with a loud thud. Marcus Vance, Daniel’s long-time chief legal counsel and senior vice president of Hale Meridian Group, strode into the dining room. He looked disheveled, holding a thick leather briefcase under his arm, his expression dark.

"We have a catastrophic situation, Daniel," Marcus announced, entirely ignoring Maria as she quietly backed out toward the kitchen. Marcus slammed a thick set of legal documents onto the polished wood. "Nathan Mercer isn't finished. He just filed a formal petition with the SEC and the Federal Trade Commission. He’s alleging that you systematically manipulated stock prices and used shell companies to orchestrate insider buyouts over the last three years. The press is already picking it up. It’s a bloodbath."
