Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Library

The crisis escalated dramatically over the next forty-eight hours. News networks ran non-stop commentary on the "Hale Empire Cracking," debating whether the notorious Ice King would survive the week. Through it all, Maria maintained the quiet order of the house, preparing warm meals Daniel forgot to eat and keeping Lily happily occupied away from the stress radiating through the corridors.
At ten o'clock on Thursday night, Daniel found Maria in the two-story library, carefully dusting the upper shelves of old law texts. The house was finally quiet; the junior lawyers and PR consultants had returned to their Manhattan hotels.
"Maria," Daniel spoke from the base of the spiral staircase.
She turned, holding her feather duster. "Yes, Mr. Hale? Do you need tea or late dinner?"
"No," Daniel said, walking over to stand near the fireplace mantle. "I wanted to tell you that you don't have to stay here through this storm. The press outside is aggressive. If you want to take Lily and stay at a hotel—at my expense—until this settles, I entirely understand."

Maria descended the stairs slowly. She looked at him directly, her dark eyes filled with a quiet strength that money could never buy. "Mr. Hale, my job is here. You have treated my daughter and me with more respect than any employer we have ever had. Lily feels safe in this house. And..." She hesitated slightly, then continued firmly. "And no one should have to face a room full of enemies without someone in their home corner. We are staying."
Daniel looked at her, speechlessly grounded by her words. For thirty-four years, every relationship in his life had been transactional—calculated based on leverage, utility, or influence. Maria’s simple loyalty hit him with the force of an anchor.
