Chapter 8 - A Crayon Blueprint

When the heavy front doors slammed shut behind the disgraced lawyer, the massive house returned to silence. Maria stood near the doorway, holding the tray, tears of anger finally spilling over her eyelashes.
"I am sorry you had to hear that, Maria," Daniel said softly, stepping closer to her. "I know what betrayal looks like. It looks like Marcus. It doesn't look like you."
"Thank you for believing in me, Mr. Hale," she whispered, drying her eyes.
From around the wooden doorframe, a small figure appeared. Lily was wearing her pajamas, clutching a piece of paper in her small hand. She walked across the room, completely unbothered by the heavy atmosphere, and pressed the paper against Daniel’s leg.
Daniel knelt down, taking the paper. It was a drawing done entirely in purple crayon. It showed a giant, crude house, a small dog, a horse, and three stick figures holding hands under a oversized sun.

"I drew us," Lily said softly, leaning her head against his knee. "So you don't feel alone when you go to your big meeting."
Daniel held the paper in his hands, his throat tightening so hard he could barely breathe. He carefully folded the crude drawing and placed it gently into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, directly against his chest. "Thank you, Lily," he whispered. "This is the most important document I own."
