Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Verdict (Expanded Version)

The federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan was completely surrounded by media vans, satellite dishes, and a massive horde of journalists eager to catch a glimpse of the biggest, most explosive corruption trial of the decade.
Inside Courtroom 4B, Marcus and his co-conspirators sat glumly at the defendant's table, their heads bowed as federal prosecutors presented an insurmountable mountain of unassailable evidence—financial ledgers, offshore wire transfers, encrypted audio logs, and witness testimonies detailing their conspiracy against the Cross shipping lines and the targeted attack on Sarah and Chloe.
In the front row of the gallery sat Bennett Cross, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, with Sarah seated to his right and little Chloe resting peacefully asleep with her head tucked comfortably against Bennett's shoulder, her small hand clutching the lapel of his jacket.
The federal judge adjusted his spectacles, looking down sternly from the polished mahogany bench.
—After reviewing the exhaustive evidence provided by federal investigators and verified through comprehensive corporate audits, this court finds all defendants guilty on all counts of racketeering, conspiracy, and attempted assassination,— the judge announced, slamming his heavy gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack that signaled an end to an era of corruption. —Each defendant is sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.—

A collective murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery as federal marshals moved in swiftly, snapping steel handcuffs onto Marcus and his associates and leading them away toward the subterranean holding cells. The last remnants of the war against Cedarhaven were officially locked away forever.
Bennett didn't even bother to watch them leave. He simply adjusted his coat to keep Chloe warm, stood up calmly, and guided Sarah out of the courtroom into the bright, clear winter sunlight waiting outside.
