Chapter 8 - Healing the Wounds (Expanded Version)

Three weeks later, the crisp autumn air had turned into the sharp, bright chill of early winter, but inside Cedarhaven, the atmosphere was warmer, brighter, and more alive than it had ever been in the estate's long, storied history.

Sarah had fully recovered from the synthetic neurotoxin poisoning. With Bennett's backing, financial resources, and absolute protection, she had taken over the foundation side of the Cross shipping empire, managing philanthropic educational and medical programs for underprivileged children across the state—turning her background in corporate finance into a powerful weapon of goodwill and community restoration.

And Chloe? Chloe had officially adopted Cedarhaven as her personal playground and royal kingdom.

On a bright Saturday afternoon, the little girl could be found sitting cross-legged on the grand mahogany desk in Bennett’s private study, using brightly colored markers to draw masterpieces while the most feared mafia boss in New York patiently helped her glue glittering sequins onto a homemade cardboard crown.

—Is this enough sparkles for a real queen, Dada?— Chloe asked proudly, holding up the glittering paper crown with a wide, gap-toothed grin.

Bennett froze for a fraction of a second at the word. Dada.

He hadn't heard anyone call him that in another lifetime, and he certainly hadn't expected to hear it echo in these stone halls again. But over the past month, as he read bedtime stories, helped search for lost toys, and watched her chase the estate's massive war dog across the manicured lawn, the word had naturally slipped from her lips—and he had never corrected her, because it felt truer than anything else in his world.

—That is precisely enough sparkles for a queen, Chloe,— Bennett said softly, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his features as he gently placed the sparkling crown atop her dark, curly hair.

Sarah walked into the study carrying a silver tray of warm apple cider and cinnamon pastries, smiling warmly as she watched the formidable mafia boss wearing a crown made of construction paper and glitter.

—You're spoiling her rotten, Bennett,— Sarah laughed gently, setting the tray down on the corner of the desk.

—She deserves to be spoiled after everything,— Bennett replied, picking up a pastry and taking a bite, his dark eyes resting warmly on both of them. —Nobody in this house will ever have to look over their shoulder or worry about the dark again.—

Sarah walked over, placing a gentle, affectionate hand on his shoulder. —Thank you, Bennett. For everything you've done. You didn't just save our lives—you gave us a true home when we had nothing left in the world.—

—We gave each other a home, Sarah,— Bennett said quietly, looking out the massive glass window toward the estate gardens where the autumn leaves danced in the crisp wind. —Lily would be so damn proud of what we built from the ashes.—
