Chapter 2 - The Perimeter Bleeds (Expanded Version)

Bennett stood up slowly, rising to his full, imposing height and towering over the little girl. The warmth that had flickered in his dark eyes a moment ago was instantly replaced by an arctic, unfeeling chill that made Walter take an involuntary half-step back in pure reflex. When Bennett Cross shifted from a grieving widower back into the apex predator of the New York underworld, the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees, the air growing heavy and difficult to inhale.
—Walter,— Bennett commanded, his voice dropping into a deadly, rhythmic register that brooked no argument. —Lock down the estate immediately. Activate secondary grid shields on all sectors. Cut off power to the outer gardens, flood the courtyards with the automated deterrents, and ensure no one leaves and no one enters without my express, personal clearance.—
—Already on it, Boss,— Walter replied, pulling his secure radio up to his mouth and barking sharp, tactical commands to the heavily armed enforcer squads stationed across the sprawling six-acre grounds. —Alpha and Bravo squads, deploy to the southern tree line right now. Live rounds authorized. We have an uninvited breach and they aren't looking to chat.—
Chloe shrank back slightly against the grand piano, intimidated by the sudden, violent shift in the room's atmosphere and the harsh edge of men preparing for battle. She clutched the frayed hem of her pink hoodie, her lower lip trembling just a fraction as her eyes darted between Walter and Bennett. —Are those bad men out there?— she whispered, her voice small and frightened. —Is that why Button ran away? Did they scare him?—
Bennett knelt down once more, coming right back to eye-level with her. His large, scarred hands rested gently and firmly on her small shoulders, anchoring her against the rising storm. His touch was iron-clad yet tender, radiating an absolute, unyielding protection.
—Listen to me very carefully, Chloe,— Bennett said, his voice dropping its dangerous edge, softening just enough for her to hear the absolute, unbreakable vow echoing beneath his words. —Nothing in this world is going to hurt you while you are standing inside these walls. Do you understand me? You are completely safe here.—
She looked up into his intense gaze, searching his face, and slowly nodded her head, comforted by the fierce, protective aura surrounding him.
Bennett stood back up, his eyes locking onto Walter's. —Keep her secure in the private study behind the three-inch reinforced steel door. Give her whatever she wants—food, water, more drawing supplies. If a single hair on her head is harmed tonight, every single man on this estate answers to me personally before the sun comes up.—
—And what about you, Boss?— Walter asked, his eyes narrowing as he saw Bennett's hand drift naturally toward the custom-fitted leather holster tucked snugly beneath his left arm, feeling the cold weight of the Sig Sauer.
May you like
—I’m going outside,— Bennett replied coldly, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. —I want to go see who’s visiting my backyard at ten o'clock at night without knocking.—
Outside the grand, floor-to-ceiling reinforced glass windows of Cedarhaven, the first sharp flash of muzzle fire cut through the heavy, rolling autumn fog. The war had arrived on his doorstep, and fate had brought a living piece of his past right into the center of the battlefield.
