Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Last Gasp (Expanded Version)

While Cedarhaven found profound peace within its reinforced walls, the remainder of the criminal syndicate attempting to eliminate Sarah and seize control of Bennett’s shipping lanes was discovering the horrifying, fatal cost of declaring war on the Cross empire.

Deep in a subterranean data bunker hidden beneath the financial district, three high-ranking syndicate lieutenants sat around a stainless-steel conference table, staring in sheer, unadulterated terror at their computer monitors as emergency alarms flashed blinding red.

—What do you mean the primary accounts are frozen?!— shouted Marcus, the lead conspirator, slamming his fists down onto the table so hard the coffee mugs rattled. —That's fifty million in offshore capital! How is that even possible overnight?—

—It's not just the bank accounts, sir!— stammered the chief tech analyst, his fingers flying frantically across his keyboard in a hopeless attempt to block the breach. —Our encrypted servers are being wiped from the inside out! Every single routing number, every bribe log, every shell corporation—it's all being systematically redirected straight to federal prosecutors and international Interpol terminals!—

Before Marcus could draw another frantic breath, the heavy steel security doors of the bunker shuddered under a massive, deafening explosion.

Boom!

The reinforced steel hinges blew outward in a brilliant shower of sparks, smoke, and shattered concrete. Through the clearing haze marched Walter and a dozen heavily armed elite enforcers from Cedarhaven’s private security detail, their assault weapons raised and locked with cold, absolute precision.

—Federal or family—nobody moves!— Walter’s voice boomed through the subterranean vault like thunder. —Hands where we can see them right now!—

Marcus scrambled backward in his executive chair, his face turning the color of ash. —You... you can't touch us! We have diplomatic immunity! We have federal protection!—

—Federal protection expired about five minutes ago when Boss Cross sent your entire financial ledger directly to the Department of Justice,— Walter said coldly, stepping forward and pressing the barrel of his sidearm against the metal table right in front of Marcus's trembling hands. —You actually thought you could touch a member of the Cross family? You thought you could hunt a little girl in Bennett's backyard and walk away?—

May you like

Marcus whimpered, sliding pathetically out of his chair onto his knees as Walter's enforcers swarmed the room, snapping heavy steel zip-ties around their wrists with practiced efficiency.

The last remaining cell of corruption and treachery in New York's underworld was extinguished in less than ten minutes. The empire was not just surviving; it was being reborn in absolute purity.
