Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Fog (Expanded Version)

The southern tree line of Cedarhaven was a dense, untamed maze of ancient, gnarled oaks, thick briars, and rotting timber that sloped sharply down toward the riverbank. Thick white fog rolled off the cold water, swallowing the amber glow of the perimeter security lamps and turning the dense woods into an eerie, disorienting ghost world where sound traveled in strange, distorted echoes.

Bennett moved through the underbrush with the silent, lethal grace of a veteran hunter who had spent decades stalking predators in the concrete jungles and country estates alike. He wore no bulky tactical vest, only a heavy dark wool overcoat that blended seamlessly into the surrounding shadows, his heavy-caliber Sig Sauer held steady and ready in his right hand, safety clicked off.

Through the shifting fog, muffled, hurried shouts echoed across the clearing near the breached chain-link fence.

—Sweep the perimeter faster!— hissed a harsh, gravelly voice through the mist. —The boss said they came straight from the yellow house! If that kid slipped through our net and reached the main mansion, she might have seen something she had no business seeing! Find her and bag her!—

Bennett stopped completely behind the thick, rugged trunk of a massive centuries-old oak tree. He narrowed his eyes, tracking the heat signatures and movement blur in the fog. These men weren't federal agents executing a warrant, and they weren't local muscle from a rival family trying to send a message. Their gear was high-end corporate mercenary surplus—black BDUs with absolutely no insignia, suppressors fitted neatly to the ends of their submachine guns, and advanced thermal night-vision goggles strapped securely to their tactical helmets. A corporate clean-up crew.

Why in the world would a high-level corporate mercenary squad be hunting a six-year-old girl who simply lost her pet cat?

A cold, terrifying realization sliced through Bennett's mind, sharper and deadlier than any blade. The yellow house down the hill. The vacant municipal parcel. The uncanny timing of Chloe's arrival at his gates tonight.

They weren't looking for a stray cat in the woods. They were looking for her. And worse—they had tracked her right to his property line, completely unaware that they were walking directly into the lion's den.

—Movement at two o'clock! Check the shadows!— barked one of the operatives, abruptly pivoting his weapon toward the exact cluster of oaks where Bennett stood hidden.

Bennett didn't wait for them to shout a warning or coordinate their fire. He raised his Sig Sauer and fired twice through the damp, swirling mist with mechanical precision.

Thwack. Thwack.

The lead operative dropped instantly, a clean, devastating round piercing his thermal visor, dropping his lifeless body onto the wet, leaf-strewn earth without a single sound. The second operative spun around in sheer panic, his boots slipping on the mud as he fired a wild, blinding burst of automatic fire into the dark. Bullets splintered the thick bark of Bennett's oak tree in a loud flurry, showering him in sharp wood chips and pulverized bark.

Bennett didn't flinch or blink. He smoothly sidestepped around the heavy trunk, closed the agonizing distance between them in three long, explosive strides, and slammed the heavy steel butt of his pistol directly into the operative's temple with crushing force. The man crumpled instantly like a broken marionette.

As the second man hit the muddy ground, a heavy-duty tactical radio clipped securely to his chest rig crackled violently to life, spilling an electronic voice out into the clearing.

—Vanguard actual to team lead! Status report! Did you secure the primary target? Answer me, do you copy?—

Bennett reached down, plucked the radio from the dead man's collar with his left hand, and brought it close to his lips. He didn't utter a single word. He simply keyed the mic, let the heavy, measured sound of his breathing fill the open frequency for three long seconds, and then crushed the plastic casing and circuitry beneath the heel of his heavy leather boot.

Let them sit in the dark and wonder who was waiting for them.
