Chapter 4 - The Secret in the Yellow House (Expanded Version)

Back inside Cedarhaven's heavily reinforced private study, Walter stood vigilant by the mahogany desk while Chloe sat cross-legged in a velvet armchair that swallowed her small frame, happily and industriously coloring with a set of antique markers Walter had scavenged from the estate's vast library shelves.
—You're really good at drawing cars, Walter,— Chloe chattered happily, holding up a remarkably detailed sketch of a vintage sedan with squiggly lines coming out of the exhaust pipe to represent smoke.
—Thank you, sweetheart,— Walter said softly, though his eyes remained strictly glued to the heavy steel door and the bank of security monitors flashing reassuring green and amber status lights on the wall. —My old high school art teacher would probably weep at my proportions, but I deeply appreciate the artistic endorsement.—
The heavy steel security door hissed open with a pneumatic sigh, and Bennett stepped inside. His dark wool coat was damp with cold river mist, and a faint, sharp scent of gunsmoke and cordite clung stubbornly to his fabric. There was a smear of dark mud across his leather gloves from the scuffle in the woods, but his posture was completely upright, composed, and terrifyingly calm.
Chloe looked up instantly from her coloring book, her large dark eyes wide with innocent wonder. —Are the bad men gone now?— she asked softly.
Bennett walked over, kneeling down beside her chair with the exact same infinite gentleness he had shown her earlier in the evening. The coldness in his eyes vanished entirely, replaced by an intense, burning wave of protectiveness.
—They're gone, Chloe,— Bennett said softly, his deep voice carrying an absolute weight of truth. —Nobody is ever going to hurt you while you're here. But I need to ask you something very important, okay? When you chased Button into the woods tonight, did anyone else talk to you or visit your house before you reached my gate?—
Chloe shook her head, her dark curls bouncing rhythmically around her face. —No, Mr. Bennett. Just Mommy. But Mommy was sleeping so deeply on the living room couch, and she wouldn't wake up even when I shook her arm really hard and called her name. So I had to go outside all by myself to look for Button.—
Walter’s breath hitched sharply in his throat. Bennett’s jaw tightened until the skin turned bone-white across his sharp cheekbones.
—Sleeping deeply,— Bennett repeated, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous whisper that rattled the glass on the desk. —How long was she sleeping like that, Chloe?—
—Since the men in the nice black coats came to our front door this morning and gave her a cup of water to drink,— the little girl said innocently, coloring in the wheel of her drawn car with a blue marker. —They told me she was just very, very tired because we had to take such a long, scary drive to get to this town.—
Bennett stood up slowly, deliberately turning away so Chloe couldn't see the dark, volcanic fury twisting his features into something monstrous. He locked eyes with Walter across the room.
—Get a full medical extraction team to that yellow house by the municipal park right now,— Bennett commanded, his voice trembling with suppressed, lethal rage. —Fully equipped trauma unit. Hazmat gear and toxicology kits if necessary. If they touched her... if they poisoned Lily's family——
—Lily's sister?— Walter echoed, his eyes widening in sudden, profound shock as the pieces finally clicked together in his mind. —Boss, you don't mean——
May you like
—Lily's younger sister, Sarah, packed up and left for the West Coast five years ago right after our wedding,— Bennett said, his voice hard as tempered iron. —She completely dropped off the grid after the syndicate wars escalated. I thought she was dead, buried out in the desert somewhere. But Chloe... Chloe is Sarah's daughter. Which means she is Lily's blood niece.—
The uncanny resemblance that had shattered Bennett's heart when he first saw the little girl wasn't just a cruel coincidence of grief. It was blood, running straight through the veins of the only family he had left in the world.
