Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Truth

Six months later, the federal trial of Richard and Camille Sterling concluded in the Charleston District Court. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity as the judge prepared to deliver the final sentencing.
Richard Sterling was found guilty on multiple counts of federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and illegal land seizure, receiving a sentence of twelve years in federal prison. Camille Sterling, found guilty of criminal destruction of property, civil rights violations, and felony assault, was sentenced to three years of community probation, mandatory restitution, and hundreds of hours of court-ordered public service.
As Camille was led out of the courtroom, she looked back one last time. Sitting in the front row, holding hands, were Everett and Amara. Camille’s eyes filled with bitter tears as she finally realized that her own cruelty had stripped her of everything, while the woman she had tried to destroy now possessed the love, respect, and fortune that Camille had taken for granted.
Outside the courthouse, a massive crowd of supporters had gathered holding signs that read "Justice for Evelyn" and "Humanity Over Wealth."
Amara stepped up to the microphones set up on the courthouse steps. She looked out at the sea of reporters, completely transformed from the hesitant, quiet woman who had once swept floors in secret.

"Today, my mother’s memory rests in peace," Amara announced, her voice strong and clear across the plaza. "This case was never just about land or money. It was about dignity. It was about proving that no matter how rich or powerful someone is, they cannot tear up another person’s humanity without facing consequences."
The crowd erupted into applause and cheers. Everett stood beside her, his hand resting lovingly on the small of her back, looking at her with pure pride and admiration.
