Chapter 5 - The War for Sterling Plaza

The atmospheric tension reached a boiling point when Everett and Amara returned to Charleston four days later. The media storm had grown out of control. Richard Sterling had called an emergency meeting with the city council and major financial backers, intending to strip Everett’s firm of its primary development permits and hand them over to Sterling Enterprises.
Outside the Charleston Municipal Building, dozens of reporters and news vans had gathered. Inside the grand auditorium, Richard Sterling stood at the podium, flanked by a tearful Camille, addressing a room full of journalists and board members.
"Everett Hale has shown a total lack of moral character!" Richard declared into the microphones. "He abandoned his sacred vows, embarrassed my daughter, and abandoned his fiduciary duties for an illicit affair with a domestic worker! We are demanding his immediate resignation from the Charleston Commerce Board!"
The crowd murmured loudly, cameras flashing rapidly.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open.
"I wouldn't sign those papers just yet, Richard," a firm, commanding voice boomed across the hall.
The entire room turned. Everett Hale strode down the center aisle, dressed in a sharp navy suit. Beside him walked Amara Bennett, wearing an elegant dark dress, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, accompanied by two of the top corporate litigators in the country.
Camille’s face went pale. "What is she doing here?!"
"Sit down, Camille," Everett commanded as he reached the podium area. He turned to the city council members. "Members of the board, ladies and gentlemen of the press. You have been told a story of betrayal and misconduct. Now, let me show you the truth."
Everett nodded to his legal team, who instantly projected high-definition scans onto the auditorium’s massive screens.
The first image was a clear video recording from the Hale estate’s foyer security camera—the exact moment Camille ripped Amara’s passport in half, screaming insults at her while Amara wept over her mother’s death. The audio was crystal clear.
The room gasped in collective horror. Camille squeezed her eyes shut as her pristine public image disintegrated in seconds.
"That," Everett said coldly, "is the true character of Camille Sterling. Destroying an emergency document of a grieving daughter to preserve a party."
Before Richard Sterling could interrupt, Everett raised his hand. "But that is only half the story. Why were the Sterlings so desperate to keep Amara Bennett quiet?"
The screens shifted to display the historical land deeds, bank records, and forensic handwriting analysis showing Richard Sterling’s illegal land grab of the Bennett family estate in 2008.
"This woman standing beside me," Everett announced proudly, pointing to Amara, "is Amara Bennett, the rightful legal heir to the land beneath Sterling Plaza. Richard Sterling committed grand fraud, extortion, and forgery to build his empire!"
Chaos erupted in the room. Reporters shouted questions, camera shutters clicked frantically, and the city council members immediately stood up in shock. Richard Sterling slammed his fist on the podium, his face red with fury.

"This is a lie! Fake documents!" Richard screamed.
"They are certified by the State Supreme Court, Mr. Sterling," Amara’s lead attorney stated calmly. "And we have already filed a federal asset freeze against Sterling Enterprises as of ten minutes ago."
