Chapter 3 - The Shadows of Toronto

The jet touched down at Toronto Pearson International Airport just as dawn broke through a sky of bruised purple and grey. A black SUV arranged by Everett’s team was waiting on the tarmac, and within forty minutes, they arrived at the solemn entrance of Toronto General Hospital.

Amara ran through the automatic doors, her heart pounding against her ribs. Everett followed closely behind, keeping a respectful distance to give her space while ensuring no bureaucratic red tape stopped her.

In the quiet waiting room of the palliative care unit, a young man with disheveled hair and bloodshot eyes sat curled up in a chair, clutching a worn leather wallet.

"Daniel!" Amara cried out.

Daniel looked up, his face breaking into tears as he scrambled to his feet. "Amara! You made it... I thought... I thought you couldn't leave the US!"

The siblings collapsed into each other's arms, weeping for the mother who had sacrificed everything to raise them. Amara held her brother tight, stroking his hair just as her mother used to do. "I'm here, Daniel. I'm here now. Nobody is going to stop us."

After a long moment, Daniel looked over Amara's shoulder and saw Everett standing near the nurse's station, quietly settling the remaining medical accounts and speaking with the hospital administrator to ensure smooth arrangements.

"Who is that?" Daniel whispered. "Is that... your boss?"

"That’s Everett," Amara said softly, looking at him with immense gratitude. "He saved us, Daniel. Literally."

Over the next two days, Everett stayed in Toronto, checking into a nearby hotel but spending most of his time helping Amara and Daniel navigate the funeral arrangements. He didn't impose himself; he simply handled the logistics, paid for the chapel services, and ensured the siblings had hot meals and quiet spaces to mourn.

However, peace was short-lived. On the morning of the memorial service, Amara’s phone began buzzing incessantly with notifications. When she opened her news app, her stomach dropped.

A major gossip tabloid had published a massive expose with the headline: "Charleston Billionaire Abandons Bride at the Altar to Fly Away with Housekeeper!"

The article featured leaked photos of Amara and Everett boarding the private jet, painting Amara as an opportunistic gold-digger who had manipulated Everett during a vulnerable moment, and framing Camille as the heartbroken victim of a cruel betrayal.

Amara felt the air leave her lungs. "Oh no... Everett, look at this."

Everett took the phone, his brow furrowing as he read the slanderous claims. His phone immediately lit up with calls from his board of directors, investors, and public relations team.

"They're trying to destroy your company," Amara said, her voice trembling. "They're ruining your father's legacy because of me. You need to go back and clear your name. Tell them the truth!"

Everett looked at the headline, then looked at Amara’s distraught face. "The truth will come out, Amara. But right now, we are burying your mother. Nothing is more important than that."
