Chapter 4 - A Mother's Final Secret

The funeral was small, intimate, and elegant. The chapel was filled with white lilies—the same flowers Amara’s mother, Evelyn Bennett, had loved. Everett sat in the back row, respectfully offering his support while allowing the family to grieve.

After the service, as they cleared out Evelyn’s small rented apartment in downtown Toronto, Daniel handed Amara a heavy, dust-covered wooden box found at the back of their mother’s closet.

"Mom told me to give this to you if anything ever happened to her," Daniel said quietly. "She said it contained the truth about why we moved to Canada fifteen years ago, and why she always insisted we keep a low profile."

Amara used a small key attached to her mother's necklace to unlock the box. Inside were stacks of old letters, legal documents, and photographs. But as Amara pulled out a specific yellowed document bearing an official seal, her breath hitched.

"What is it?" Daniel asked.

Amara’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "This... this is an original corporate land deed from 2008. For the downtown Charleston historic district..."

Everett, who had been carrying boxes to the hallway, stopped in his tracks upon hearing the word "Charleston." He walked over to the table. "Did you say Charleston historic district?"

"Yes," Amara said, her hands trembling as she read the names on the document. "Look at the original owner's name. It's my grandfather, Arthur Bennett. He owned the entire four-acre parcel where the Sterling Plaza currently stands!"

Everett took the document carefully, inspecting the official stamps and signatures. As a real estate developer, he knew the history of Charleston like the back of his hand. "The Sterling Plaza... that’s Richard Sterling’s flagship development. It made his fortune. But three decades ago, the land was acquired under mysterious circumstances after a forced foreclosure."

He turned the page and found a series of threatening letters signed by none other than a young Richard Sterling, demanding Arthur Bennett sell the land for pennies on the dollar, followed by fraudulent bank seizure notices.

"Your mother didn't just leave South Carolina because of bad luck," Everett realized, his eyes flashing with sudden understanding. "She was forced out by Richard Sterling. He stole your family’s inheritance, destroyed your grandfather’s business, and forced your mother into hiding!"

Amara sat down hard on the sofa, overwhelmed by the revelation. "So all this time... while I was working as a housekeeper for Camille Sterling, enduring her insults... her family was living off the wealth stolen from mine?"

Everett’s jaw set tightly. The puzzle pieces were falling into place. "Camille didn't just tear up your passport because she was selfish, Amara. When you mentioned your mother’s full name during your emergency request, she must have recognized it. She realized who you were, and she tried to keep you trapped so you would never find out the truth."
