Chapter 2 - A Race Against Time and Storms

By midnight, the atmosphere in Charleston had shifted violently. A severe subtropical storm was rolling in off the Atlantic, dumping torrents of rain across the runway at the private airfield. Inside the terminal, Everett was on the phone with three different state officials, while Claire worked her magic on the diplomatic channels.

Amara sat on a sofa in the private lounge, holding her phone tightly. She had spoken briefly to her younger brother, Daniel, whose broken voice kept ringing in her head: "Amara, please tell me you're coming... they're going to move Mom to the mortuary, and I don't know what papers to sign..."

"We have a breakthrough," Claire announced, rushing over with an iPad in hand. "Because of Everett's philanthropic work in international disaster relief, the passport agency in Atlanta opened a special late-night window for emergency documentation. The consular officer has approved Amara's expedited travel pass based on the death certificate faxed from Toronto General Hospital."

Amara wept with relief, covering her face. "Thank you... thank you so much, Claire."

Everett handed Amara a warm coat and a brand-new leather bag containing cash, a secure phone, and updated travel documents. "We have a two-hour window before the storm grounds all private aircraft in South Carolina. Our jet is fueled and ready on the tarmac. Amara, we're getting you to Daniel."

As they boarded the Gulfstream jet, the rain lashed against the windows. Everett sat across from Amara, ensuring she was comfortable. For the first time in months, Amara actually looked at the man who was upending his entire life for her. Everett Hale was not just wealthy; he possessed an undeniable gravity, a quiet strength that made everyone around him feel safe.

"Why are you doing all this for me, Mr. Hale?" Amara asked softly as the jet engines roared to life. "I was just a housekeeper. Camille made sure I knew my place every day."

Everett looked out the window at the dark runway before turning back to her. "My father died when I was nineteen, Amara. I was in the middle of taking an exam at college when I got the call. I didn't make it back in time to say goodbye. The guilt of missing those final moments haunted me for a decade. I swore to myself that if I ever had the power to prevent someone else from feeling that pain, I would do whatever it took."

He looked gently into her eyes. "And please... call me Everett."

Meanwhile, back in Charleston, the storm was not the only thing brewing. In the penthouse of the Grand Sterling Hotel, Camille was screaming at her father, Richard Sterling, a ruthless real estate tycoon.

"He publicly humiliated me, Dad!" Camille sobbed, throwing a crystal glass against the wall. "He canceled the wedding for a maid! A worthless immigrant maid!"

Richard Sterling’s eyes narrowed as he poured himself a scotch. "Everett Hale thinks he's untouchable because of his father's legacy. He just handed us the perfect weapon. We won't just ruin his reputation, Camille—we are going to take everything he owns."
