Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Hill

Winter arrived in New York, dusting the city in a clean, brilliant blanket of white snow.

At the Romano villa in the hills, the large fireplace in the main drawing room crackled with warmth. A massive Christmas tree stood near the arched windows, decorated with gold lights and crystal ornaments.

Sofia stood by the window, watching the snow fall gently over the garden. She felt a pair of strong, warm arms wrap gently around her waist from behind. She leaned her head back against Alessandro’s chest, resting her hands over his.

"What are you thinking about?" Alessandro asked softly, burying his face in the soft curve of her neck.

"I was thinking about last winter," Sofia murmured, looking out at the snow. "Last year, I was wondering how I was going to pay for heating in our tiny apartment. I was terrified every single night that I wouldn't wake up in the morning, and Emma would be left alone."

Alessandro turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away a stray tear.

"Those nights are over, Sofia," he promised, his dark eyes burning with fierce tenderness. "You and Emma will never be cold again. You will never be alone again."

"I know," she smiled, reaching up to touch his jawline. "I love you, Alessandro."

It was the first time she had said the words out loud. Alessandro’s heart hammered against his ribs. He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, passionate, reverent kiss that sealed years of pain and brought them both into the warmth of the present.

From the hallway, a soft cough interrupted them.

They pulled back slightly to see Emma standing in the doorway, wearing warm flannel pajamas and holding her old, worn teddy bear in one hand, while her other hand held a brand-new silver watch box.

"Are you two done kissing?" Emma asked with a mischievous grin. "Because it's midnight, and it's officially Christmas."

Alessandro laughed, letting go of Sofia’s waist to hold his hand out to Emma. "Come here, little one."

Emma ran over and jumped into his arms. Alessandro lifted her up easily, carrying her over to the sofa near the fireplace. Sofia sat down beside them, wrapping her arm around Alessandro’s shoulder.

Emma handed the silver box to Alessandro. "Mom and I got this for you. We picked it together."

Alessandro opened the box to reveal an exquisite pocket watch, engraved on the back in delicate script:

May you like

To Alessandro — For stopping your time to save ours. Love, Sofia & Emma.

Alessandro traced the engraved letters with his thumb, emotion tightening his throat. "It is the best gift I have ever received."
