Chapter 4 - The Ledger's Shadow

Three days passed. Sofia’s fever broke, and color slowly returned to her cheeks. Under the care of St. Jude's top specialists, her breathing cleared, though she remained dangerously weak.
In the meantime, Alessandro had moved both mother and daughter to his private estate in the hills overlooking the city—a heavily fortified villa surrounded by olive groves and guarded by his most trusted security force. To Emma, the villa felt like a castle from a fairy tale; to Sofia, it felt like an intimidating fortress of gold and iron.
Sitting on the sunlit terrace, wrapped in a cashmere shawl provided by Alessandro's staff, Sofia looked out at the gardens. Emma was playing near the fountain with a brand-new set of art supplies Alessandro had ordered for her.
A shadow fell over the table as Alessandro stepped onto the terrace, holding a dark leather folder.
"You look better," he said, taking a seat opposite her.
"Mr. Romano," Sofia began, her voice still somewhat raspy. "The doctor said I can go home now. We've taken up too much of your time and your home. I don't know how I will ever repay you for the hospital bill, but I will find a way—"
"The hospital bill is paid," Alessandro interrupted, placing the folder on the table between them. "And as for returning home... your landlord on 5th Street surrendered your lease yesterday after I purchased the entire building."
Sofia blinked, stunned. "You... you bought my building?"
"It was a rat-infested fire hazard run by a slumlord," Alessandro stated bluntly. "It is currently being demolished. You and Emma will not be returning there."
Sofia felt a sudden pang of fear mixed with overwhelming helplessness. "Mr. Romano, I am grateful, truly. But I cannot accept charity. I am a cleaner. I work for what I have."
"I am not offering charity, Sofia," Alessandro replied, opening the leather folder. "I am offering a resolution."
He slid several documents toward her. The top document was a bank draft made out to Sofia Rossi for the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Sofia gasped, pulling her hand back as if the paper were red-hot. "What is this? I am only owed four months of back pay—about six thousand dollars!"
"Six thousand is what Victor stole from your wages," Alessandro explained, his voice turning cold. "The rest is compensation from the hotel's executive fund for the physical negligence, distress, and endangerment you suffered under my roof. Furthermore, my legal team has audited Victor Vance's entire operation."
Alessandro leaned forward, his dark eyes fixing on hers. "When we seized Victor's private files, we found something else, Sofia. Something that had nothing to do with hotel housekeeping."
Sofia froze, her breath catching in her throat. The color that had returned to her face drained away in an instant.
"Victor wasn't just embezzling," Alessandro continued softly. "He was receiving monthly payments from a private investigator in Milan. A man searching for a woman named Sofia Moretti—the missing widow of Giuliano Moretti."
Sofia’s hands began to tremble uncontrollably beneath her shawl. She looked past Alessandro toward Emma, who was happily drawing a picture of the villa.
"Emma made a mistake in the lobby the night we met," Alessandro whispered, watching Sofia's reaction closely. "She called herself Emma Moretti before correcting it to Rossi. Giuliano Moretti was my cousin. He was murdered five years ago in a syndicate war in Naples."
Sofia covered her face with her trembling hands, a dry sob escaping her throat. "Please... please don't send us back to Naples... they killed him... they will take Emma..."

Alessandro stood up, moved around the table, and placed a solid, reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"Giuliano was blood," Alessandro said, his tone dropping to a lethal, unyielding rumble. "Which means Emma is blood. And no one touches my family."
