Chapter 7 - The Light in the Fortress

Two weeks later, the rain had finally cleared, replaced by the crisp, golden light of early autumn.
At the Romano estate, the gardens were alive with color. Emma was running across the lush green lawn, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy Alessandro had bought for her. Her cheeks were full and rosy, her laughter ringing out across the quiet courtyard.
On the terrace, Sofia sat in a comfortable armchair, reading a book. She wore an elegant cream-colored silk sweater and trousers—gifts from Alessandro’s personal stylist. Her health had almost completely restored, her skin glowing with newfound life and tranquility.
Alessandro walked out onto the terrace, carrying two cups of fresh espresso. He set one down in front of her and took the seat beside her.
"Thank you," Sofia said softly, offering him a genuine, breathtaking smile that lit up her entire face.
"How are you feeling today?" Alessandro asked.
"I feel... like I am living in a dream I don't deserve to wake up from," she admitted, watching Emma play with the puppy. "The lawyers called me this morning. They explained the trust fund. Alessandro... it is too much money. We don't need millions."
"It belonged to Giuliano," Alessandro reminded her gently. "It was meant to secure his daughter’s future so she would never have to sit in a hotel lobby waiting for help again."
Sofia looked down at her coffee cup, her expression turning thoughtful. "She asks about you every day, you know. Before she goes to sleep, she asks if 'Mr. Alessandro' is staying at the house tonight."
A rare, warm smile touched Alessandro’s lips. "She’s a remarkable child. She saved your life that night, Sofia. If she hadn't spoken up, I would have walked right past."
"No," Sofia corrected gently, looking straight into his dark eyes. "Emma told me what you did. She said you crouched down to her level. She said every other adult walked past, but you stopped. You didn't know who she was then. You helped her because of who you are."
Alessandro looked away, a rare moment of vulnerability flickering across his rugged features. "When I was nine, my mother died of an illness in a cold room while my father was away fighting syndicate wars. I watched her hide her cough in a handkerchief, just like Emma watched you. I promised myself I would never let a child carry that kind of helplessness alone again."
Sofia reached across the small table and gently laid her hand over his—the same way he had caught her hand in the hospital room.

"You aren't that helpless nine-year-old boy anymore, Alessandro," she whispered softly. "You are the man who saved us."
Alessandro turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers with hers. For the first time in ten years, the heavy, suffocating silence inside his chest felt light.
