Chapter 3 - Shadows of St. Jude's

The private wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was silent except for the rhythmic beep of a heart monitor. Soft, warm light filtered through the private room, where Sofia Rossi lay hooked to an IV line, an oxygen mask covering her nose and mouth.

Dr. Valenti stood at the foot of the bed, reviewing a digital chart when the door opened. Alessandro walked in, having changed into a fresh suit.

"How is she?" Alessandro asked quietly.

"Severe double pneumonia complicated by extreme physical exhaustion and malnutrition," Dr. Valenti replied, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "If she had spent another six hours without medical intervention, her lungs would have failed completely. We've started her on broad-spectrum antibiotics and fluids. She’s stable, but she will need weeks of complete rest."

Alessandro looked over at the small armchair beside the bed. Emma was fast asleep, curled up with her worn teddy bear tucked under her chin, a clean wool blanket draped over her shoulders.

"And the child?"

"Physically fine, though mildly malnourished," the doctor noted. "She refused to go to the pediatric ward. She insisted on staying right where she can see her mother."

Alessandro walked silently to the side of the bed. He looked down at Sofia’s pale, delicate face. Stripped of the hotel uniform and the grime of hard labor, she looked remarkably young—no older than twenty-nine. Yet the sharp contour of her cheekbones and the dark circles under her eyes told a story of brutal, unforgiving hardship.

Suddenly, Sofia stirred. Her eyelashes fluttered, and a weak gasp escaped from beneath the oxygen mask. Her hand reached out blindly on the white sheets.

"Emma..." she rasped, her voice barely a whisper. "Emma..."

Alessandro stepped forward and gently caught her trembling hand in his. "She's safe, Sofia. She’s right here, asleep in the chair."

Sofia’s eyes opened fully, cloudy with fever and confusion. She looked up at the stranger holding her hand—a man in an immaculate Italian suit, possessing authority that radiated like heat.

"Who... who are you?" she murmured, trying to pull her mask down.

"Keep it on," Alessandro instructed gently, pressing the mask back over her mouth. "My name is Alessandro Romano. I own the Palazzo."

Panic flared in Sofia’s eyes. She tried to sit up, her body shaking violently. "Mr. Romano... I'm sorry... I'll finish room 1408... please don't fire me... I need the work... Emma needs..."

"Listen to me," Alessandro interrupted, his voice firm, grounding her frantic breathing. "You are not fired. You will never have to clean another room in my hotel again. The man who withheld your pay has been removed. You and your daughter are safe."

Sofia stared at him, tears welling in her exhausted eyes and spilling down her pale cheeks. She didn't understand why the ruthless owner of the city's grandest hotel was standing in her hospital room, speaking to her with such quiet reverence.

"Why... why are you doing this for us?" she whispered.

Alessandro looked over at Emma sleeping peacefully in the armchair, then back down at Sofia.

"Because your daughter stood in my lobby tonight and spoke your name like a shield," he said softly. "And because no mother who fights that hard for her child will ever fight alone in my city again."
