Chapter 2 - The Audit of Shadows

The Executive Club on the 20th floor offered a sweeping view of the rain-slicked skyline. Inside, the mood was festive. Victor Vance—a man in his late forties with slicked-back hair, an overly tailored suit, and a smile that never quite reached his eyes—was pouring glasses of vintage Macallan for three city officials.

"I assure you, gentlemen," Victor smiled smoothly, swirling his glass, "the Palazzo Romano operates under the strictest standards of excellence. Our books are pristine, our service is world-class, and our discretion is absolute."

"Is that so, Victor?"

The voice came from the double doors at the entrance of the lounge. It wasn't loud, but it possessed a weight that instantly silenced the laughter in the room.

The city officials turned, their expressions shifting from relaxed arrogance to pale dread as they recognized the man walking toward them. Alessandro Romano walked with slow, deliberate strides, his hands casually resting in his trousers pockets. Behind him stood two imposing men in dark suits who immediately positioned themselves at the doors, locking them from the inside.

Victor’s smile faltered, a bead of sweat forming at his temple. "Mr. Romano! We—we weren't expecting you tonight. I was just giving the inspectors a tour of our hospitality suites."

"Leave," Alessandro said softly, not even looking at the city officials.

The three men didn't wait for a second instruction. They abandoned their expensive whiskey, practically pushing past each other to exit through the side service door.

Once the room was clear, Alessandro walked over to the bar, picked up a crystal tumbler, and poured himself a finger of water. He took a slow sip before turning his gaze back to Victor.

"Tell me, Victor. What is the policy regarding sick leave for our cleaning staff?"

Victor blinked, thrown off by the unexpected question. "I... well, Mr. Romano, we follow standard labor regulations. If an employee misses shifts without a medical certificate, their pay is temporarily frozen until HR reviews the case."

"And if an employee works for fourteen months, has blood in her lungs, and is owed four months of back pay while raising a seven-year-old child?" Alessandro asked, his voice chillingly pleasant. "What is the policy then?"

Victor’s skin went gray. "I... I don't recall a specific case like that, sir. We have hundreds of staff members—"

"Her name is Sofia Rossi," Alessandro interrupted, stepping closer until he was standing mere inches from the general manager. "And her daughter, Emma, sat in my lobby tonight eating half a granola bar because her mother couldn't afford milk. Because you stole her wages."

"That's a misunderstanding!" Victor stammered, backing up until his spine hit the edge of the mahogany desk. "She was unreliable! She missed days—"

Alessandro reached into his pocket, pulled out the crumpled ledger page, and slapped it flat onto the desk.

"This isn't about missed shifts, Victor. This is about four million dollars funneled into an account in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Hospitality Logistics.' You held back the salaries of thirty-two low-income workers over the last year to offset the discrepancies in your ledgers before the annual audit."

Victor looked at the paper, his jaw working silently as panic took total control. "Mr. Romano, please... I can explain. It wasn't just me! I was approached by—"

"You yelled at a sick woman on Friday," Alessandro said softly, his dark eyes locked onto Victor's trembling frame. "You told her it was her own fault she was starving. You made a child carry a weight that didn't belong to her."

Alessandro turned his back on Victor and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the rain beat against the pane.

"Marco," Alessandro called out toward the doorway.

Marco stepped into the lounge, his expression grim.

"Take Mr. Vance to the basement storage facility," Alessandro ordered calmly. "Strip him of his credentials, freeze every asset tied to his name, and find out who else in corporate helped him build this paper trail. If he tries to speak to anyone outside this building, cut his tongue out."

"Please! Mr. Romano, mercy!" Victor shrieked as Marco’s men seized his arms, dragging him backward across the polished floor. "I have a family!"

Alessandro didn't even turn around. "So does Sofia Rossi."
