Chapter 7 - Chloe's Desperation

The outdoor courtyard of the museum was thrown into chaos. Guests rushed to the balcony, staring into the dark, murky depths of the sixty-foot-deep reflecting pool. The rain was pouring down now, churning the water and making visibility completely impossible.
Chloe sat on the marble floor, her red dress stained with rain and dirt, her hands secured in zip-ties by Vanderbilt security. She was laughing hysterically, her eyes wild.
"You lose, Maya! You’re just a waitress again! The court will dismiss your case tomorrow morning without the physical artifact!"
Maya walked out onto the balcony, the rain soaking her hair and her midnight-blue gown. She didn't look angry. She didn't look panicked. She stood at the edge of the stone balustrade, looking down at Chloe with a look of profound, devastating pity.
"You really don't understand, do you, Chloe?" Maya said, her voice clear and calm despite the thunder rumbling above them.
Julian walked out onto the balcony, holding a sleek, waterproof metal briefcase. He opened it, revealing a high-definition monitor displaying a live, encrypted digital upload stream.
The Digital Masterstroke"The necklace you just threw into the pool was a replica, Chloe," Julian said, his voice echoing through the silent courtyard. "We knew exactly what your mother would try to do tonight. The real butterfly wing was delivered to the federal forensic laboratory three hours ago under armed escort. They have already extracted the micro-engraved serial code and confirmed its authenticity against Helena Lancaster's original patent registry."
The laughter died instantly in Chloe’s throat. Her face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated terror.
"No... no, that's impossible... I felt the gold... I felt the weight..."
"We had a master jeweler copy the exact weight and dimensions of the original," Maya said, stepping down until she was kneeling directly in front of her broken sister. "I wanted to see if you had even a single ounce of love or remorse left for your own family, Chloe. I wanted to give you a chance to stand beside me tonight and tell the truth. But you chose to destroy me instead. You didn't just throw away a piece of metal, Chloe. You threw away your last chance at redemption."
Right on cue, the heavy iron doors of the museum courtyard burst open. A dozen federal agents from the Financial Crimes Division marched into the rain, led by a stern woman with a silver badge.

"Chloe Lancaster?" the lead agent announced. "You are under arrest for criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and attempted assault. Your parents, Charles and Victoria Lancaster, have already been detained at their residence on charges of multi-million-dollar inheritance fraud and corporate forgery."
As the agents lifted Chloe to her feet and marched her through the crowd of flashing cameras, she looked back at Maya. For the first time in her life, she wasn't looking at her sister with contempt or anger. She was looking at her with the pure, terrifying realization of a child who had finally realized she was entirely alone in the dark.
