Chapter 3 - Banished to the Shadows

Maya walked out of the Lancaster gates alone, the heavy iron bars slamming shut behind her with a metallic echo that felt like a sentence. The cold rain began to fall, soaking her thin clothes as she walked down the dark, winding avenue toward the subway station.

But behind her, inside the manor, a different kind of storm was brewing.

"Are you insane?!" Chloe screamed at her parents inside the library. She slammed her hand against the mahogany desk, knocking over a crystal inkwell. "You let her walk out of here with that necklace! Do you know what the high-society blogs will do if someone snaps a photo of her wearing the other half of my brand?"

"Calm down, Chloe," Victoria said, her face composed but her mind working at a frantic, calculated pace. "I’ve already contacted Arthur Pendelton, our chief legal officer. By tomorrow morning, every major media outlet in the state will receive a preemptive injunction. Anyone who publishes a story about a 'second Lancaster daughter' will face a hundred-million-dollar defamation suit."

"And what about the video?"

Charles looked up sharply from his desk. "What video?"

Chloe pulled out her phone, her fingers trembling as she pulled up a private high-society forum on the dark web. A fifteen-second video clip had already been uploaded by an anonymous guest. It clearly showed Chloe throwing the champagne, delivering the brutal slap to Maya, and Maya whispering the words “Happy birthday, sister” before the feed cut black.

The view count was climbing by the thousands every minute.

The First Fracture"Find whoever recorded this and destroy them," Victoria ordered her security chief over the intercom, her voice shaking with an uncharacteristic edge of panic. "I want that video scrubbed from every server in the country within the hour!"

"It's too late for that, Victoria," a deep, resonant voice spoke from the shadows of the library door.

The family turned to see Julian Vanderbilt standing there. Dressed in a flawless charcoal suit, the young billionaire heir to the Vanderbilt Group looked at Chloe with a cold, analytical detachment that made her heart freeze. He was not just Chloe’s fiancé; he was the primary anchor of the multi-billion-dollar merger that kept the Lancaster family at the top of the financial food chain.

"Julian!" Chloe forced a breathless, desperate smile, rushing toward him and trying to wrap her arms around his waist. "Don't listen to anything you see online. It’s a complete hoax. A disgruntled kitchen worker tried to extort us on my birthday—"

Julian stepped back, gently but firmly removing her hands from his jacket.

"I was standing near the terrace when it happened, Chloe," Julian said, his eyes dark with a mixture of disgust and profound disappointment. "I saw the slap. I saw the necklace. My family does not do business with people who treat their own flesh and blood like stray dogs on the street. Until this 'anomaly' is fully investigated and resolved by an independent audit, the Vanderbilt Group is freezing all merger negotiations."

Chloe watched in horror as her future husband turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving behind a silence more terrifying than any scream.
