Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror

The sting of the slap still echoed in the grand ballroom of the Lancaster Manor, vibrating through the towering crystal chandeliers and freezing the breath of three hundred high-society guests.
Chloe Lancaster stood under the brilliant lights, her breath ragged, her cheeks flushed with a volatile mixture of anger and humiliation. Her diamond-encrusted birthday tiara caught the light, casting sharp, jagged reflections across the room. At her feet lay a spilled tray of expensive champagne, the golden liquid seeping into the pristine white velvet carpet.
But no one was looking at the champagne.
Everyone's eyes were pinned to the young woman standing in a wrinkled catering uniform. Maya’s left cheek was a stark, angry red, the shape of Chloe’s hand burning into her pale skin. Tears spilled silently from her dark eyes, trailing through the dust of the kitchen she had been cleaning all evening. In her trembling hands, she held a small, battered cardboard box wrapped in fading twine.
Then, the words left Maya's lips, soft but carrying the force of a thunderclap:
"Happy birthday, sister."
The Breath of ScandalA collective gasp rippled through the elite crowd. Chloe’s mother, Lady Victoria Lancaster, dropped her wine glass, the expensive vintage shattering loudly against the marble perimeter. Beside her, Lord Charles Lancaster froze, his cigar dropping from his fingers.
"What did you just say?" Chloe hissed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, erratic whisper. She took a step back, her hands instinctively flying to her throat. "You pathetic, clumsy peasant. How dare you call me that? Security! Throw this delusional creature out into the street!"
But the security guards, usually ruthless and efficient, stood completely paralyzed. Their eyes were locked on what Maya was pulling from the battered box.
With shaking fingers, Maya lifted a delicate piece of jewelry from the velvet lining. It was a tarnished gold chain holding a single, beautifully carved wing—the left half of a butterfly necklace.
The ballroom fell into an even deeper, suffocating silence.
Chloe’s hand dropped from her neck, revealing the jewelry she had worn every single day of her life. Dangling from her throat was a pristine gold chain holding a matching carved wing—the right half of the exact same butterfly necklace.
"No... no, this is a trick," Chloe stammered, the color completely draining from her face, leaving her looking like a ghost in her expensive designer gown. "You stole that. You’re a thief! You found a replica and engineered this to ruin my twenty-fifth birthday!"

Maya looked up, her gaze steady despite the tears streaming down her face. She didn't look at Chloe with anger. She looked at her with a profound, agonizing sorrow.
"I didn't steal it, Chloe," Maya whispered, her voice vibrating through the silent hall. "Our biological mother, Helena, placed the right wing around your neck before she died in that hospital fire twenty years ago. She gave the left wing to the nurse, begging her to find the sister who had been stolen from the cradle. I am that sister. I didn't come here to steal your wealth, Chloe. I just wanted to see my family."
