Chapter 6 - The Great Corporate Warfare

The Vanderbilt Museum was a monument to wealth and power, its soaring glass architecture reflecting the starry night sky. Tonight, the city's entire financial elite had gathered for the Annual Winter Gala, but the real attraction wasn't the art—it was the formal public debut of Maya Lancaster.
Dressed in a stunning, midnight-blue silk gown provided by Julian’s designers, Maya looked breathtaking. She wore no diamonds, no tiara, no expensive cosmetics. Her only accessory was the tarnished left wing of the gold butterfly necklace, resting proudly against her collarbone.
Beside her, Julian stood like an iron shield, introducing her to the senior board members of Lancaster Global who had secretly broken away from Victoria’s faction.
"She has her mother’s presence, Julian," Marcus Vance, the oldest and most influential board member, said, looking at Maya with tears in his old eyes. "I worked with Helena for fifteen years. She would be proud to see her daughter standing here tonight."
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Maya said with a warm, genuine smile. "I don't want to destroy Lancaster Global. I want to return it to what my mother intended—a company that builds up the community, not one that crushes people beneath its heels."
Suddenly, the crowd parted, a collective murmur of tension filling the air.
Chloe Lancaster had just walked through the glass entrance.
The Clashing of SistersShe was dressed in a sharp, blood-red gown, her face pale but composed. She held a glass of red wine in her hand, her eyes locked onto Maya with a terrifying intensity. The guests watched in breathless silence as the two sisters closed the distance between them, a perfect split image of light and darkness.
"Chloe," Julian stepped forward, his arm moving instinctively to block her from getting close to Maya. "You were not invited to this event. Security is fully authorized to remove you."
"I’m just here to speak to my sister, Julian," Chloe said, her voice smooth, almost sweet, but her eyes burning with an unstable light. She stepped past him, standing inches from Maya. "Can a sister not wish her twin well before the court decides our fate tomorrow?"
"You don't look well, Chloe," Maya said softly, looking at the desperation hidden beneath her sister's expensive makeup. "This war is destroying you. Look at yourself. Is this empire worth your soul?"
"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Chloe whispered, leaning close enough for only Maya to hear, her hand tightening around her wine glass. "You think because you have Julian, you can take my life from me? You’re nothing but a ghost from a fire that should have finished the job twenty years ago."
With a sudden, violent motion, Chloe lunged forward. She didn't throw the wine—she dropped the glass, using her free hand to claw viciously at Maya’s throat, her manicured nails digging into the flesh as she ripped the gold butterfly necklace from Maya’s neck.
"Chloe, stop!" Julian roared, grabbing her arm and pulling her back, but the chain had already snapped.

Chloe stumbled backward, clutching the tarnished gold wing in her hand. A maniacal smile broke across her face as she ran toward the open balcony overlooking the museum's outdoor reflecting pool. Before anyone could stop her, she raised her hand high above her head and threw the precious heirloom into the deep, dark water below.
"It’s gone!" Chloe laughed hysterically as the security guards tackled her to the marble floor. "The key is gone, Maya! You have nothing left!"
