Chapter 4 - The Viral Exposure

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the Lancaster Empire was on fire.
Despite Victoria’s massive legal threats, the viral video had mutated across mainstream social media platforms. The hashtag #JusticeForMaya was trending worldwide. Activists, ordinary citizens, and corporate competitors united in their outrage over the public degradation of a working-class waitress by a billionaire heiress.
Lancaster Global’s stock price plummeted by fourteen percent within the first ten minutes of the opening bell, wiping out nearly four hundred million dollars in paper wealth.
Inside her small, cramped studio apartment on the industrial side of the city, Maya sat at her kitchen table, staring at a bowl of cold oatmeal. Her phone was buzzing continuously with alerts, private messages, and calls from unknown numbers.
Suddenly, a heavy, synchronized knock echoed against her wooden door.
Maya froze, her hand tightening around her gold butterfly wing. "Who is it?"
"Open the door, Maya. It’s Julian Vanderbilt."
An Unexpected AllianceMaya cautiously opened the door, leaving the security chain attached. Standing in the dim, graffiti-covered hallway was the city’s most eligible billionaire, unaccompanied by guards, his coat damp from the morning mist.
"What do you want?" Maya asked defensive. "Did the Lancasters send you to buy me out again? I already told them my answer."
"I’m not here on behalf of the Lancasters, Maya," Julian said, his eyes meeting hers through the gap in the door with a sincerity that caught her off guard. "I’m here because I hate liars. And I’ve spent the last three years being lied to by the woman I was supposed to marry. Let me help you get what rightfully belongs to you."
Maya hesitated for a long moment before unlatching the chain and letting him inside. The contrast between his expensive presence and her small apartment was stark, but Julian didn't flinch. He sat on a worn wooden chair, placing a sleek leather document folder on the table.
"Your biological mother, Helena, wasn't just Charles’s wife," Julian explained, opening the folder to reveal certified corporate filings from twenty-five years ago. "She was the primary founder of Lancaster Global. Her family provided eighty percent of the initial capital. According to her original will, which was buried by Victoria after the fire, her firstborn daughter inherits the controlling voting shares of the entire estate—not Chloe."
Maya stared at the signatures on the document. Her mother’s handwriting was elegant, beautiful, and completely identical to the script on the back of her gold butterfly wing.

"Why are you doing this, Julian?" Maya asked, looking at him with deep suspicion. "You were engaged to Chloe. Your family needs this merger."
"My family needs a partner with honor, Maya," Julian said softly, standing up and stepping closer to her. "Chloe is a hollow shell manufactured by her mother’s vanity. But you... you stood in that ballroom, took a blow from the most powerful family in the city, and walked away with your head held high. You are the true legacy of Helena Lancaster. And it’s time the world saw the real queen take her throne."
