Chapter 6 - The Custody Trap

Two weeks later, Emily received a court summons. David had formally filed for full legal and physical custody of the triplets, claiming that Emily was an unstable mother whose high-demand career led to child neglect. Attached to the petition were fabricated affidavits from former disgruntled employees of Emily’s boutique, claiming she was emotionally volatile and left her children unattended for days.

The local news picked up the filing, creating a fresh wave of public debate. David took to television interviews, playing the role of a heartbroken father who had been "tricked" out of six years of his children's lives by a vindictive ex-wife.

"I just want to be a dad," David pleaded falsely in front of news cameras, squeezing out tears for the viewers. "I was denied the right to hold my babies because she wanted revenge."

The strategy was clear: create enough public pressure to force Emily into a quiet, out-of-court financial settlement that would save David's failing business.

On the day of the preliminary hearing, the courtroom was packed with reporters, observers, and camera crews. David sat at the defense table with Marcus Stone, wearing a somber suit and looking like a devoted, grieving father.

Emily entered the courtroom accompanied by Julian Vance, who had officially stepped in as her lead counsel. She wore a tailored beige suit, her posture composed, holding a sleek leather briefcase.

The judge slammed her gavel down. "We are here in the matter of Brooks v. Ellis. Mr. Stone, you may present your initial argument."

Stone stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, my client was systematically deprived of his paternal rights. Miss Ellis hid these children for six years in a cold, calculated attempt to deny them a father's love. Furthermore, we have testimony showing she frequently leaves these young children alone while pursuing her corporate ambitions."

The judge looked over her glasses at Emily. "Mr. Vance, how does your client respond?"

Julian stood up, unbuttoning his suit jacket with absolute calm. "Your Honor, we respond not with empty words, but with undeniable facts."
