Chapter 9 - The Battle for the Vancini Line

Clara sprinted through the grand hallways, holding Sophia tightly in her arms as bullets shattered the stained-glass windows above them. The estate was a war zone—shouted orders, grenade explosions, and the continuous roar of automatic weapons echoed through the marble corridors.
She reached Dante’s private study, slamming the heavy door behind her. She rushed to the bookshelf, pulling the hidden lever that opened the reinforced titanium panic room.
"Get inside, Sophia! Quick!" Clara urged, ushering the child into the dimly lit, bulletproof bunker.
Before Clara could step inside herself, the study door was blown off its hinges by a breaching charge. The explosion threw Clara across the room, slamming her hard against the desk.
Through the smoke, Victor Moretti stepped into the study, holding an assault rifle, his face twisted in a murderous grin. Behind him stood Beatrice, holding a silenced pistol.
"Where is he?" Victor sneered, stepping over the debris toward Clara, who was struggling to stand, blood trickling from a cut on her forehead. "Where is the Iron King?"
"He's coming for you," Clara spat, coughing through the smoke, positioning her body directly in front of the panic room door.
Beatrice walked up, raising her pistol, pointing it directly at Clara’s head. "You ruined everything, little waitress. If you hadn't showed up with your stupid chocolate heart, Dante would have married me, and our families would have ruled New York together."
Inside the panic room, Sophia watched through the heavy glass window. Panic surged through the child’s veins as she saw the woman pointing a gun at Clara—the woman who had given her back her voice, her warmth, her life.
Sophia didn't hide. She didn't freeze.
She grabbed the emergency air-horn mounted on the inside wall of the panic room and slammed her hand down on the trigger.
A deafening, high-pitched screech echoed through the ventilation shafts of the entire mansion.
Victor and Beatrice covered their ears in agony, caught off guard by the piercing sound.
In that second of distraction, the wall behind them exploded outward.
Dante Vancini burst through the dust like an enraged titan. He tackled Victor Moretti through the study’s glass window onto the balcony outside. The two men crashed onto the stone floor in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle.
Beatrice raised her pistol to shoot Dante from behind, but Clara didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the desk and slammed it with all her strength into the back of Beatrice’s head. Beatrice crumpled to the floor, unconscious.
On the balcony, Dante disarmed Victor, grabbing the rival boss by his throat and lifting him over the stone balustrade, three stories above the paved driveway.
"Please, Dante!" Victor choked out, terror in his eyes. "Mercy!"

"You threatened my family," Dante roared, his voice shaking the very foundation of the house. "There is no mercy in my house!"
Dante opened his hand. Victor Moretti fell into the dark night below.
