Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

The bliss of their growing love was shattered three weeks later by a phantom from the past.
Clara was in the estate’s greenhouse, teaching Sophia how to plant miniature sunflowers in clay pots. The morning sun was warm, and Sophia was laughing—a sweet, musical sound that had become common in the house over the past few months.
"Look, Clara!" Sophia piped up, pointing her dirt-covered finger at a small green sprout. "It’s growing!"
"It is, sweetheart!" Clara smiled, wiping a smudge of dirt from the girl's nose. "Just like you."
From the entrance of the greenhouse, a woman’s heels clicked sharply against the marble walkway.
"How touching," a sharp, aristocratic voice rang out.
Clara stood up instantly, pushing Sophia behind her.
Standing in the doorway was a tall, breathtaking woman with raven hair, wearing an emerald-green designer suit and diamond jewelry. Her eyes were cold, assessing Clara with cruel amusement.
It was Beatrice Moretti—Victor Moretti’s sister, and the woman who had spent years trying to arrange a political marriage with Dante to unite the two largest crime families in the tri-state area.
"Who are you?" Clara demanded, keeping her arm firmly in front of Sophia. "This is a private estate."
"I know where I am, darling," Beatrice sneered, walking closer, ignoring the two guards who were frantically rushing into the greenhouse behind her. "I used to sleep in the master bedroom before Dante’s saintly late wife ruined everything."
Dante entered the greenhouse at a run, his face dark with fury. "Beatrice. Get off my property before my men throw you into the Hudson River."
Beatrice didn't flinch. She smiled calmly, pulling an official-looking Manila envelope from her leather purse.
"I’m not here to fight, Dante," Beatrice said smoothly, tossing the envelope onto the potting table beside Clara. "I’m here to deliver a gift from the Commission. A little revelation about your sweet, innocent fiancée."
Clara frowned, looking at the envelope. "What is this?"
"Open it, darling," Beatrice taunted. "Tell the Iron King who your father really was."
Clara’s blood ran cold. She reached out with trembling fingers and pulled the documents from the envelope. Inside were old police reports, mugshots, and financial ledgers dating back twenty years.
Dante stepped beside Clara, his eyes scanning the top document. His jaw tightened instantly.
"Your father wasn't just a mechanic who died in a hit-and-run, Clara," Beatrice laughed softly, her voice venomous. "He was Thomas Mercer—the undercover federal informant who gave the FBI the wiretaps that put Dante’s father in prison for life."

Clara looked up at Dante, tears welling in her eyes, her voice breaking. "Dante... I didn't know. My mother told me he died in an accident... I swear to God I didn't know!"
Dante stared at the mugshot of Thomas Mercer. The man who had destroyed his father’s life and nearly shattered the Vancini empire twenty years ago was the father of the woman he now loved.
