Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The news hit the estate like a mortar shell. The district attorney, Marcus Sterling, had been trying to put Dante behind bars for a decade. Using Clara’s sudden disappearance from Marino’s Diner, Sterling was preparing to frame Dante for kidnapping and coercion.
In the command room downstairs, computer monitors flickered with data streams. Dante stood over his security team, his jaw clenched tight.
"Sterling doesn't care about Clara's safety," Dante growled. "He wants to use her as a leverage chip to force me into a plea deal. If they put her on the witness stand, they'll tear her life apart."
"I can testify," Clara said, stepping into the command room. She wore a simple white blouse, her hair pulled back. "I can tell them the truth. I came here voluntarily. I’m Sophia’s tutor."
"It doesn't work like that, Clara," Dante said, turning to her, his tone protective and harsh. "Sterling will dig up your mother’s hospital debts. He’ll claim I bought your silence, that I paid off your loans to force you into hiding my crimes. They will paint you as an accomplice to a mob organization."
Clara pale face showed her shock. "Then what do we do?"
"We control the narrative," Dante said. He looked at Marco. "Call a press conference at the Plaza Hotel for tomorrow afternoon."
"A press conference?" Marco blinked. "Boss, you never speak to the media."
"I do tomorrow," Dante said, his gaze locking onto Clara with an intensity that made her throat dry. "We give them a story so big that Sterling’s subpoena looks like a political witch hunt."
The next afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with over two hundred reporters, news cameras, and police observers. Flashes blinded the stage as Dante Vancini walked out, wearing a flawless midnight-blue suit.
Beside him walked Clara, wearing an elegant dark velvet dress provided by Dante’s stylists, her posture regal despite her inner terror. Sophia walked between them, holding both of their hands.
Dante stepped up to the podium, ignoring the barrage of shouted questions.
"For three years," Dante spoke into the microphones, his powerful voice cutting through the noise, "my family has suffered in silence following the tragic loss of my wife. My daughter, trauma-stricken, lost her ability to speak."
The room quieted down, reporters leaning in.
"The state prosecutor has accused me of harboring and coercing Miss Clara Mercer," Dante continued, laying his hand gently on Clara’s waist. "They claim she is a victim of my organization. They are wrong."
Dante looked down at Clara, a profound warmth filling his eyes that was captured live on national television.
"Miss Mercer is not my captive," Dante announced clearly. "She is my fiancée."
Gasp. Flashes erupted like lightning across the room. Reporters began shouting wildly. Clara stood frozen, her heart hammering in her chest, staring at Dante in total shock.
He hadn't warned her. It was a tactical masterstroke—a legal shield that protected her from being forced to testify against him under spousal privilege, while completely destroying the prosecution's narrative of kidnapping.

Dante leaned down, whispering in her ear as the cameras flashed frantically: "Play along, Clara. Save us."
Clara looked at the sea of cameras, then down at Sophia, who was smiling up at her. She took a deep breath, leaned up, and kissed Dante’s cheek in front of the world.
