Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Library

A month passed, and the estate settled into a tense, beautiful routine. The threat from the Moretti family had temporarily subsided, and the house began to feel less like a prison and more like a sanctuary.
Late one evening, after Sophia had fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep, Clara walked down to the grand library to return a book on childhood cognitive development. She expected the room to be empty, but found Dante sitting in a wingback chair by the fireplace, an unlit cigar between his fingers, staring into the flames.
He had shed his tie, his top shirt buttons undone, revealing the edge of a jagged scar across his collarbone.
"She slept through the night again," Clara said softly, stepping into the warm glow of the firelight.
Dante looked up. The cold, ruthless man who had crushed Victor Moretti was nowhere to be seen. In his place was a tired father carrying an unbearable debt of grief.
"She hasn't slept through the night since her mother died," Dante said, his voice thick with emotion. He gestured to the chair across from him. "Sit down, Clara. Please."
Clara sat, the plush leather soft beneath her. "She’s resilient, Dante. She just needed to know that her grief wasn't a crime."
Dante looked into the fire. "Her mother—Elena—died in a car bomb meant for me. Sophia was in the backseat. She survived without a scratch, but she saw... everything. I brought her home, I killed the men responsible, but I couldn't fix her. Every time I looked at her, I saw my own failure."
"You didn't fail her," Clara said gently, reaching out on instinct and placing her hand over his broad, calloused knuckles. "You protected her the only way you knew how. But children don't need a fortress, Dante. They need to know they aren't alone in the dark."
Dante stared at her hand on his. He turned his palm upward, entwining his long fingers with hers. The contrast between them was striking—her soft, ink-stained fingers against his rough, scarred skin.
"And who protects you, Clara?" Dante asked quietly, his blue eyes searching her face. "You carry her pain, you carry my household’s tension, but you have no one looking out for you."
"I can take care of myself," Clara whispered, her heart beating rapidly against her ribs.
"No," Dante said, stepping closer as he stood up, pulling her gently up with him. The space between them vanished, filled with an unbearable magnetic pull. "Not anymore. You brought light back into this house, Clara. I won't let anyone dim it."
His hand reached up, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone. Clara held her breath, her mind telling her to step back from the dangerous mob lord, but her heart anchored her to the floor.

Before their lips could meet, a sharp knock at the library door shattered the moment.
Luca stepped in, looking panicked. "Boss... it’s the district attorney. They just issued a subpoena for the diner's security footage from the day you picked up Clara. Someone leaked that she's here."
