Chapter 6 - A Dangerous Illusion

The fake engagement made headlines across the nation. "The Mobster and the Miracle Worker" read the front page of the New York Post. The district attorney’s case collapsed within forty-eight hours under the overwhelming public sympathy for the little girl who had found a mother figure.

But inside the estate, the boundary between fake and real began to blur dangerously.

Clara moved into the master wing of the house to maintain the illusion for the staff and security team. Her room was connected to Dante’s through a set of double doors.

Late one evening, after a long day of dealing with lawyers and public relations managers, Clara sat on the balcony of her room, looking out over the moonlit gardens. She wore a soft silk robe, wrapping her arms around herself against the chill breeze.

The connecting door opened, and Dante stepped out onto the balcony. He carried two glasses of wine, handing one to her.

"I owe you an apology," Dante said softly, leaning his arms on the stone railing. "I threw you into the lions' den without your consent."

"It saved my family from bankruptcy and kept me out of prison," Clara replied, taking a sip of the sweet red wine. "You did what you had to do."

"It wasn't just tactics, Clara," Dante confessed, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. He turned to face her, the moonlight highlighting the sharp, masculine angles of his face. "When I said those words at the Plaza... I realized I didn't want it to be a lie."

Clara’s heart skipped a beat. "Dante..."

"I know who I am," Dante continued, stepping closer, trapping her gently against the balcony railing. "I am a man with blood on his hands. I built an empire out of violence because this city leaves no room for weak men. But when I am with you... I want to be the man my daughter sees. The man you see."

"You don't have to pretend with me, Dante," Clara whispered, looking up into his fiery blue eyes. "I know the monster, and I know the father. I’m not afraid of you."

Dante reached out, his long fingers cupping her chin, lifting her face to his. "You should be," he murmured, his breath warm against her lips. "Because once I take you, Clara... I am never letting you go."

May you like

He leaned down and kissed her. It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss. It was deep, possessive, and filled with months of built-up desire and relief. Clara gasped against his mouth, her hands sliding up into his thick dark hair, pulling him closer.

For the first time in her life, she felt entirely consumed, not by fear, but by a passion so intense it scared her.
