Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Gala

In the grand ballroom, soft classical music played as silver-haired billionaires and high-society women chatted under glittering chandeliers. Eleanor Kingsley sat at the head table alongside Julian Croft, sipping champagne, a triumphant smile playing on her lips.
"The soup is being served now," Julian whispered to her, looking at his watch. "In two hours, the first symptoms will begin. By midnight, the health inspectors will be here."
"A tragic end to my son's foolish little fairy tale," Eleanor murmured, taking another delicate sip.
Suddenly, the classical music stopped abruptly.
The grand lights in the ballroom dimmed, and a single bright spotlight illuminated the main stage.
Adrien Kingsley walked onto the stage, holding a microphone. Beside him stood Grace, looking composed, powerful, and strikingly beautiful.
The crowd applauded politely, assuming it was time for the keynote charity speech.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Adrien’s voice echoed through the massive speakers, calm and cold as steel. "Thank you for joining us tonight for the Kingsley Hope Initiative Gala."
Eleanor watched from her table, frowning slightly. Something felt wrong. Why were they on stage before the meal was served?
"Tonight, we intended to celebrate hope, charity, and second chances," Adrien continued, his eyes sweeping over the crowd until they locked directly onto his mother. "But before we serve dinner, I have a special presentation regarding corporate integrity."
Adrien gestured to the giant LED screen behind him.
The screen flashed to life. Instead of charity video footage, it displayed a high-definition video recording from the kitchen service corridor taken just twenty minutes ago.
The entire ballroom gasped.
The video clearly showed Thomas Vance—Julian Croft’s associate—bribing a dishwasher, sneaking into the prep area, and pouring a clear liquid from a small vial into the large broth vats. The video then cut to a second angle: Eleanor Kingsley handing a thick envelope of cash to Thomas Vance in a dark parking garage three nights prior.
Murmurs of absolute horror and shock exploded across the ballroom. Guests began whispering franticly, pointing at Eleanor’s table.
Eleanor’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble floor. Her face was completely ghost-white, her eyes wide with terror.
Julian Croft stood up frantically, trying to head toward the side exit—only to find four armed police officers and Marcus blocking his path.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking.
Adrien looked down at him from the stage with supreme coldness. "The meaning, Julian, is that you and my mother just committed corporate terrorism, attempted mass poisoning, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Adrien stepped closer to the edge of the stage, speaking directly into the microphone so every reporter and billionaire in the room heard every word.
"My mother, Eleanor Kingsley, could not accept that this company chose compassion over greed," Adrien announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "She attempted to poison three hundred of our guests—her own friends and colleagues—just to frame Grace Vance and reclaim control of Kingsley Enterprises."
Reporters in the room began flashing cameras furiously, capturing Eleanor’s hysterical, disgraced expression.
Two senior police detectives stepped up to Eleanor’s table.
"Eleanor Kingsley, Julian Croft," the lead detective announced loudly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit mass poisoning, corporate fraud, and endangerment. You have the right to remain silent."
"Get your hands off me!" Eleanor shrieked, struggling against the cold metal cuffs as the officers secured her wrists behind her back. "I am Eleanor Kingsley! You can't do this to me! Adrien! Tell them! ADRIEN!"
Adrien stood on the stage, watching his mother being led away in handcuffs in front of the entire high-society elite she had spent her whole life trying to impress. There was no joy in his eyes—only a deep, quiet sadness for the woman who had traded her soul for power.
"Take her away," Adrien said softly into the microphone.
As the police dragged Eleanor and Julian out of the ballroom amidst a frenzy of media camera flashes, the room fell into a tense, breathless silence.
Grace stepped up to the microphone beside Adrien. She looked out at the stunned crowd, her voice calm, clear, and full of quiet dignity.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Grace said softly. "Dinner will be delayed by thirty minutes while my team prepares a fresh, safe meal from scratch. But tonight, the charity continues. Because no amount of toxicity can stop us from doing what is right."
The room paused for a fraction of a second—and then erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation.
