Chapter 6 - The Dinner Party Trap

The social worker stopped dead in her tracks, looking in panic at the lawyer beside her. Antonio stepped forward, slapping a freshly signed, legally stamped marriage certificate onto the social worker's clip board.

"Check the records," Antonio smiled wickedly. "Mrs. Clara Rossi is the legal stepmother and primary caregiver. Under Statute 402, an infant under six months actively nursing cannot be separated from his mother without a formal high-court trial. Now... get out of my client's house."

Defeated and humiliated, the officials were forced to turn around and leave empty-handed.

That night, the Rossi mansion celebrated a victory, but the war was far from over.

By the end of the week, the public news of Lorenzo Rossi’s sudden marriage to a former maid sent shockwaves through the underworld. To prove to his allies and enemies that the marriage was legitimate—and that the Rossi family was stronger than ever—Lorenzo announced he would host the annual Syndicate Peace Gala at our estate.

"The head of the Moretti family, Don Eduardo Moretti, will be there," Lorenzo told me as we prepared in our bedroom.

He was standing behind me, helping me fasten a brilliant diamond necklace around my neck. The contrast between my simple past and this unimaginable luxury was staggering. I was wearing an elegant dark red velvet gown that subtly concealed my motherly body while making me look like royalty.

"Eduardo is an old snake," Lorenzo warned, his hands lingering on my shoulders. "He will try to intimidate you. He will try to make you slip up. He wants to prove you are just a weak maid playing dress-up."

"I am not weak," I said, meeting his gaze in the mirror. "I survived Marcus. I survived losing my baby. Your mafia rivals don't scare me."

Lorenzo smirked, a breathtaking, rare smile that made my heart leap. He leaned down and kissed the sensitive skin just below my ear. "That is why you are my queen."

When we walked down the grand staircase into the ballroom filled with hundreds of high-society mobsters, politicians, and billionaires, every head turned.

Whispers swept through the crowd like wildfire.

“Is that her? The maid?” “Look at the way he holds her... he’s never looked at a woman like that before.”

Midway through the evening, Don Eduardo Moretti approached us. He was an elderly man with silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and a walking cane topped with a silver skull.

"Lorenzo," Eduardo sneered, offering a fake smile. "And this must be the lovely new bride. Clara, isn't it?"

"Mrs. Rossi," I corrected him immediately, keeping my chin high and my voice icy calm.

Eduardo’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Ah, of course. Forgive me. I must admit, we were all surprised. A man like Lorenzo marrying his help... it makes one wonder if you were just a convenient pawn to protect his failing household."

"A pawn?" I took a step closer to Eduardo, refusing to bow to his intimidating presence. "If protecting a child from cowards who poison baby bottles makes me a pawn, Don Eduardo, then I wear the title proudly. But in this house, I am the queen. And I advise you to watch your tongue before my husband decides to cut it out."

The surrounding mob bosses gasped. Lorenzo let out a low, dark laugh, wrapping his arm possessively around my waist.

Eduardo’s face turned bright red with fury, but before he could respond, a sudden commotion broke out near the back entrance of the ballroom.
