Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Feast

In the two weeks following the historic board meeting, life seemed to transform at a miraculous speed.
The Elm Street building was officially protected, and construction began on transforming it into a modern, beautiful community center with living quarters, classrooms, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. The story of the Kingsley Hope Initiative hit the national news, sending Kingsley Enterprises' stock prices soaring to an all-time high.
Adrien and Grace grew closer with every passing day. What started as a shared battle had blossomed into a deep, undeniable love. They spent their evenings together at the shelter, reading to the children, or sharing quiet dinners in the mansion's kitchen—which no longer felt cold or empty.
However, beneath the surface of this newfound happiness, a dark storm was brewing.
Eleanor Kingsley had not accepted her defeat. Humiliated by her son and humiliated in front of the board, she had retreated to her private estate in the Hamptons. But she was far from dormant.
In a secluded VIP lounge in downtown Manhattan, Eleanor sat across from a sharp-looking man in a expensive suit. His name was Julian Croft—a notorious corporate speculator and Adrien’s fiercest rival in the financial market.
"Are you sure about this, Eleanor?" Julian asked, swirling a glass of scotch. "If Adrien catches wind that you are leaking internal financial data to my firm, it’s treason against your own family."
"Adrien is no longer my son," Eleanor said coldly, her face hardened like stone. "He has let a lower-class cook manipulate him into softness. He is destroying the Kingsley legacy. If I cannot control Kingsley Enterprises, I will burn it to the ground and buy back the ashes."
"And the cook?" Julian sneered.
"The cook will be taken care of permanently," Eleanor replied, her eyes narrowing. "The annual Kingsley Gala is taking place this Saturday. It is the most high-profile charity event of the year. Grace Vance will be catering the event as her official debut as Director. If something goes catastrophically wrong with the food... if prominent high-society guests fall violently ill..."
Julian smiled, catching her drift. "A public health disaster traced directly to her kitchen. The health department shuts her down, the foundation collapses, Adrien’s reputation is ruined, and the board will have no choice but to remove him immediately."
"Precisely," Eleanor whispered, sliding a thick envelope of cash across the table to Julian's associate—a disgraced former sous-chef who had been blacklisted from the restaurant industry. "Make sure the toxin is tasteless, odorless, and undetectable until hours after ingestion."
Saturday evening arrived. The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was decorated in gold and crystal. Over three hundred elite guests—politicians, billionaires, foreign diplomats, and media moguls—filled the room for the annual Kingsley Gala.
In the hotel’s massive commercial kitchen, Grace was in her element. She commanded a staff of twenty chefs with calm, absolute authority. The menu was an exquisite seven-course meal, featuring rare seafood, aged beef, and delicate French pastries.
Adrien stepped into the kitchen, wearing a sharp black tuxedo. He looked breathtakingly handsome. He walked up behind Grace, who was carefully plating a line of appetizers, and wrapped his arms gently around her waist.
"You look busy, Chef Vance," Adrien murmured into her ear, sending a pleasant shiver down her spine.
Grace laughed softly, leaning back against his chest for a brief second. "Mr. Kingsley, you are disturbing the kitchen staff."
"Let them watch," Adrien smiled, turning her around to face him. He took a small velvet box from his pocket and placed it in her hand.
Grace looked at him, surprised. "What is this?"
"Open it," Adrien said softly.
Grace opened the box. Inside lay a delicate gold necklace with a small pendant shaped like an olive branch, encrusted with tiny diamonds.
"It symbolizes new beginnings," Adrien murmured, fastening the necklace around her slender neck. His fingers brushed against her skin, making her heart race. "You gave me a new beginning, Grace. I want to give you the world."
Grace looked into his eyes, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it brought tears to her eyes. "Adrien... I don't need the world. I just need you."
Before Adrien could kiss her, Marcus burst through the kitchen doors, looking pale and frantic.
"Mr. Kingsley! We have a problem," Marcus gasped, catching his breath.
Adrien stepped back, his brows furrowing. "What is it, Marcus?"
"Security just spotted Julian Croft entering the ballroom," Marcus said urgently. "And... Mrs. Kingsley just arrived with him."
Grace felt a sudden knot tight in her stomach. "Eleanor is here?"
"She has every right as a major shareholder to attend," Adrien said, his jaw tightening. "But why is she with Croft? They're business enemies."
"I don't know, sir," Marcus said. "But one of our security guards noticed a man matching the description of Thomas Vance—no relation to Grace, a disgraced chef who used to work for Croft—slipping out of the kitchen service corridor five minutes ago."
Grace’s eyes widened in immediate panic. She turned around and ran directly to the plating station where the second course—a rare shellfish soup—was ready to be served to three hundred guests.
"Stop!" Grace screamed to the waiters who were about to push the serving carts out into the dining room. "Don't touch those bowls!"
The entire kitchen fell dead silent.
"Grace, what is it?" Adrien asked, rushing to her side.
Grace grabbed a silver spoon and sniffed the broth of one of the soup bowls. To an untrained nose, it smelled like rich cream and herbs. But to a Michelin-trained head chef with an extraordinary sense of smell, there was a faint, almost imperceptible metallic undertone— bitter almond and zinc.
"Potassium cyanide compound..." Grace whispered, her face draining of all color. "It's diluted... not enough to kill immediately, but enough to cause severe food poisoning, organ distress, and massive internal bleeding within hours."
Adrien grabbed her arm, horrified. "Someone poisoned the food?"
"If this had reached the tables..." Grace gasped, terror choking her voice, "...hundreds of people would be hospitalized. The company would be destroyed... and I would be sent to prison for life."

Adrien’s eyes turned into cold, lethal ice. He turned to Marcus. "Lock down all exits in the hotel immediately. Nobody leaves this building."
Adrien looked at Grace, his chest heaving with rage. "It's time to end this once and for all."
