Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Safe House

Three hours passed inside the vault. The air was cool and filtered, but the tension was suffocating.
Leo was crying again, weak but persistent. He was starving.
Sitting down on a plush bench inside the vault, I gently unbuttoned my blood-stained maid’s uniform once more. As soon as Leo felt my skin, he latched on eagerly. I wept quietly in the dim light, watching his tiny cheeks move as he drank.
"I've got you," I whispered, stroking his thin tufts of dark hair. "I won't let anyone hurt you, Leo. I promise."
In that dark, sealed room, the boundaries of my life blurred. I was no longer just Clara the grieving mother, nor was I Clara the low-wage maid. By feeding Lorenzo Rossi’s son, I had stepped over a line from which there was no turning back.
Suddenly, the control panel on the vault wall hummed to life. A camera monitor blinked on, revealing Lorenzo’s face. He was covered in soot, his white dress shirt torn and stained with blood, but his posture remained towering and unbroken.
"Clara," his voice came through the intercom speaker. "The main house is secure. I am opening the door."
The heavy titanium bolts retracted, and bright light flooded the chamber. Lorenzo stood outside, flanked by four heavily armed guards I hadn't seen before—his personal elite guard, men who looked like modern gladiators.
He stepped inside and looked down at me. His gaze shifted from my face to Leo, who had finally fallen asleep against my breast, satisfied and full for the first time in his life.
Lorenzo’s expression softened, an extraordinary sight on a man known as the city's most ruthless syndicate lord.
"He ate?" Lorenzo asked softly.
"He drank almost everything I had," I murmured, carefully rebuttoning my shirt. "He wasn't sick, Mr. Rossi. Someone was poisoning his food, little by little, to make it look like a natural failure to thrive."
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened, a vein pulsing on his temple. "The doctor who prescribed the formula was on the payroll of the Moretti family—our rivals across the river. My night nurse was giving him low doses of arsenic mixed with sedatives."
I gasped, pulling the sleeping baby closer. "How could anyone do that to an infant?"
"To break me," Lorenzo said bluntly. "My wife died in childbirth two months ago. They knew if Leo died, I would be unhinged. Angry. Reckless. Easy to trap."
He stepped closer, kneeling in front of me so we were eye-to-eye. His heavy, warm hand gently touched the side of Leo’s face before shifting to rest near my shoulder.
"You saved my son’s life tonight, Clara. And you shot the man who harmed you."
"Is Marcus... dead?" I asked, my chest tightening.
"Not yet," Lorenzo replied coldly. "I'm keeping him alive down in the cellar. He has answers I need. But as for you... your life as a maid is over."
May you like
"What do you mean?"
"You are moving into the master suite starting tonight," Lorenzo declared firmly. "You will be Leo’s sole caregiver and wet nurse. You will have your own security detail, an unlimited allowance, and full protection of the Rossi name. Anyone who wants to harm you will have to step over my dead body first."
