Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Storm

The next morning, the rain had returned with a vengeance, beating against the stained-glass windows of the Kingsley estate. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension.

Grace arrived at 5:30 AM, her hands still shaking as she recalled the previous night. She had used the refrigerated van Adrien provided to transport the supplies to the shelter. The children had wept with joy when they opened the boxes—fresh milk, winter coats, brand-new shoes, and high-quality meals. For one night, the shelter felt like a kingdom.

But Grace knew the truth: they were living on borrowed time.

As she prepped vegetables in the kitchen, she heard raised voices coming from Eleanor’s private study downstairs.

"What do you mean the demolition is delayed?!" Eleanor’s sharp voice cut through the heavy wooden doors. "We have a contract with Vanguard! The bulldozers were scheduled for next Monday!"

Grace stopped chopping. She froze near the open corridor, holding her breath.

"There... there was a sudden environmental hold filed by legal, Mrs. Kingsley," a nervous male voice—likely one of the company's junior lawyers—replied. "An anonymous structural audit was requested regarding the 4th and Elm site."

"Anonymous?" Eleanor slammed her hand on her desk. "There are no anonymous requests in my company! Who authorized this?"

"It... came from the CEO's office, ma'am. Mr. Adrien signed the executive hold."

Grace felt a gasp catch in her throat. 4th and Elm? That was the address of her shelter! Vanguard Real Estate Holdings... was owned by Kingsley Enterprises?

The realization hit Grace like a physical blow. The company trying to demolish her children's home, the entity that had been sending her threatening eviction notices for months, was owned by the family she served every single morning.

And Adrien knew.

Her mind raced. Was Adrien’s kindness last night just a tactic? Was he buying her silence? Was he playing a cruel game, offering her small crumbs of charity with one hand while his company prepared to crush her shelter with the other?

Deeply shaken, Grace backed away from the door, her chest heaving. She felt betrayed, angry, and utterly terrified.

That afternoon, Adrien returned to the mansion early. He had managed to secure a temporary injunction against Vanguard's demolition order, but he knew Eleanor was already pushing back through her network of corrupt city officials.

He walked into the kitchen, hoping to see Grace, hoping to tell her that he was fighting for her.

Instead, he found the kitchen completely quiet. A pot of soup was simmering on the stove, but Grace was nowhere to be seen.

"Grace?" Adrien called out.

He walked toward the back pantry, then noticed the small staff breakroom near the service entrance. The door was slightly ajar.

Adrien pushed it open gently—and froze.

Grace was standing near her locker, packing her personal belongings into a small backpack. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying.

"Grace?" Adrien stepped into the room, his heart sinking. "What are you doing?"

Grace turned around. The warmth and vulnerability she had shown him the night before were completely gone. In their place was a wall of cold, guarded fury.

"I'm leaving, Mr. Kingsley," she said, her voice shaking with controlled rage.

"Leaving? Why?" Adrien took a step toward her, but she immediately took two steps back.

"Don't come near me," Grace snapped, tears spilling over her lashes again. "How could you? How could you stand in my kitchen, look me in the eye, act like you cared about those children, when your company is the one trying to throw them onto the street?!"

Adrien’s heart stopped. "You found out about Vanguard."

"Yes! I found out!" Grace yelled, no longer caring if Eleanor heard her. "Vanguard Holdings is Kingsley Enterprises! You own the building! You've been sending me eviction notices! And last night... last night you gave me a van and some food like I was a charity case, while your mother plans to send bulldozers to flatten the only home those kids have!"

"Grace, listen to me—" Adrien tried to speak, taking a fast step forward.

"No! You listen to me!" Grace wiped her cheeks aggressively. "My sister gave her life for those kids! They have nobody else! I thought... I actually thought for a second that you were different. I thought you were a good man. But you're just like your mother. You buy people off with your money while you destroy their lives!"

"That's not true!" Adrien shouted back, his own emotions breaking through his controlled facade. He grabbed her wrists gently but firmly, forcing her to look at him. "Grace, look at me! I didn't know Vanguard owned the building until yesterday! The moment I found out, I filed an executive hold to stop the demolition!"

Grace stared at him, breath hitching, her body tense. "What?"

"I am fighting my own mother to save that building," Adrien said, his voice dropping to an intense, desperate whisper. His eyes were wide, filled with a raw honesty she had never seen in a man of his stature. "I halted the bulldozers. I am trying to find a legal loophole to transfer the deed out of Kingsley Enterprises' control before my mother realizes what I'm doing. I swear to you, Grace... I would never hurt those children. I would never hurt you."

Grace looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of a lie. She saw no deception—only fear, urgency, and a deep, burning passion.

"Is... is that true?" she whispered, her anger slowly dissolving into confusion and exhaustion.

"Every word," Adrien said softly, slowly releasing her wrists, though his hands lingered near hers. "I know who I am to the world, Grace. I'm the cold billionaire who cuts deals and destroys competitors. But around you... around those kids... I don't want to be that man anymore. Please. Trust me."

Grace looked down at her hands, her mind spinning. The contrast between Adrien’s powerful reputation and his tender actions toward her was dizzying.

Before she could answer, the door to the breakroom slammed open with a loud BANG.

Eleanor Kingsley stood in the threshold, flanked by two burly, suit-wearing security guards. Her face was contorted in deep disgust.

"So," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "The truth finally comes out."

Adrien immediately stepped in front of Grace, shielding her with his body. "Mother. Get out."

"Get out?" Eleanor laughed coldly, stepping into the small room. "In my own house? I don't think so, Adrien. I had your secretary's tablet mirrored this morning. I know everything. I know about the shelter. I know about your secret hold on the Elm Street property. And I know you've been compromising this family's multi-million dollar investments for a common, thieving cook!"

"She is not a thief!" Adrien roared, his voice echoing through the corridors.

"She stole from our kitchen! She seduced my son into sabotaging his own company!" Eleanor snapped. She pointed a sharp, manicured finger at Grace. "You are fired, Miss Vance. Effective immediately. And as for your precious little illegal orphanage on Elm Street..." Eleanor smiled—a terrifying, cruel smile. "...the demolition permits have been fast-tracked. The bulldozers arrive tomorrow morning at sunrise."

Grace let out a strangled cry, her world shattering in an instant. "No! Please! You can't!"

"I can, and I will," Eleanor said coldly. "Guards, escort Miss Vance off the property. If she sets foot on Kingsley land again, have her arrested for trespassing and theft."

"Touch her and you're fired," Adrien snarled at the guards, who hesitated, caught between the mother and the CEO.

"Adrien, stand down!" Eleanor commanded, her eyes flashing with cold rage. "You are risking your entire future! The board meeting is in three days. If I tell the board you are mentally unstable and destroying assets for a servant, you will be stripped of your CEO position by sunset!"

Grace looked at Adrien. She saw the sheer agony on his face—torn between saving his legacy and protecting her. She couldn't let him ruin his entire life for her.

"Adrien... stop," Grace whispered, pulling gently on his arm. Tears were flowing down her face. "Don't do this. Don't lose everything."

"Grace, no—" Adrien turned to her, grabbing her hands.

"I have to go to the kids," Grace said, her voice breaking. "I have to get them out before tomorrow morning."

She pulled her hands away from his, picked up her backpack, and ran past Eleanor and the guards out into the pouring rain.

"Grace!" Adrien shouted, attempting to chase after her, but Eleanor stepped directly into his path, backed by the two guards.

"If you go after her, Adrien," Eleanor said, her voice cold as ice, "I will ensure that those children are placed into state custody by tonight, and that shelter is leveled before midnight. Try me."

Adrien stood frozen in the hallway, his breathing heavy, his hands trembling with rage. For the first time in his life, he hated the wealth and power that carried his name. But as he watched Grace disappear into the storm, a dark, unstoppable resolve settled inside his chest.
