Chapter 8 - THE TOTAL COLLAPSE

With Victoria locked in county jail awaiting trial and Grant facing decades in federal prison, Evelyn moved to finalize the destruction of every asset they had ever touched.

She bought out Grant’s remaining company stock for pennies on the dollar, completely restructuring Sterling-Vale Logistics into a charitable trust that provided housing and support for young single mothers—a poetic slap in the face to the man who had thrown his own wife and newborns out into the cold.

She bought the old Greenwich Mansion back from the trust, stripped it of every single piece of luxury furniture Victoria had accumulated, and donated the entire estate to a local women’s shelter network.

One evening, Evelyn walked into the visitor center at the federal detention facility to see Grant one last time before his formal sentencing.

Grant sat across the thick glass partition, wearing a worn orange uniform. He looked fifteen years older, his hair graying, his hands rough and dirty.

“Evelyn...” Grant whispered into the telephone receiver, his voice trembling. “Please... I know I don’t deserve forgiveness. But please... let me see the boys once before I go away.”

Evelyn held the phone to her ear, looking at him with cool detachment. “You will never see them, Grant. I have legally changed their last name to Vance-Sterling. As far as the world is concerned, they have no father.”

“I was stupid! I was weak!” Grant sobbed, slamming his fist against the glass. “My mother controlled my mind! I loved you, Evelyn! I really did!”

“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have let me stand barefoot in the snow while your mother spat in my face,” Evelyn replied, her voice cold and unyielding. “You didn’t love me, Grant. You loved the idea of a weak woman you could feel superior to. And when you realized I was stronger than you, you let your mother destroy me.”

She adjusted her coat and stood up.

“Your legal team reached out asking for a plea bargain,” Evelyn said quietly. “I told my lawyers to press for the maximum sentence. You will serve twenty-five years without parole.”

“Evelyn, no! Please!” Grant begged, pressing his face against the glass, weeping hysterically.

Evelyn hung up the phone, turned her back, and walked out without looking back once.
