Chapter 1 - THE FROZEN EMPIRE

The biting winter air burned Evelyn’s lungs, but the ice inside her chest was far colder than the snow melting beneath her bare feet. She cradled her ten-day-old twin boys, Leo and Alexander, tightly against her body, wrapping them in her coat to shield them from the freezing wind. Behind her, the towering iron gates of the Vale Manor slammed shut with a heavy, final clang.

High above the driveway, standing on the grand marble portico, stood Grant and his mother, Victoria. Victoria held a glass of vintage champagne, her diamond necklace sparkling under the outdoor lanterns, a cruel, triumphant smirk plastered across her face.

“Go back to the gutter where you belong, Evelyn!” Victoria shouted, her voice echoing through the storm. “You thought having his bastards would earn you a ticket into the Vale dynasty? You’re nothing but a pathetic gold digger! Security, if she sets foot on this pavement again, call the police for trespassing!”

Grant didn’t even look her in the eye. He adjusted his silk robe, turned his back, and walked inside, slamming the heavy mahogany door.

Evelyn lowered her head. A single tear froze on her cheek—not from grief, but from pure, unadulterated fury. They thought she was Evelyn Vale, the quiet, humble interior designer Grant had picked up at a gallery five years ago. They thought she had no family, no backing, and no choice but to endure Victoria’s constant humiliation.

They didn’t know that Evelyn Vale was a ghost persona. They didn’t know she was Evelyn Vance-Sterling, sole heir and CEO of Vance Global Holdings, a conglomerate with an estimated valuation exceeding $8 billion.

Slinking toward the side gate, Evelyn slipped into a sleek black SUV that pulled up quietly without headlights. The door opened, and Julian Vance, her personal attorney and general counsel, stepped out, immediately wrapping a heated cashmere blanket over her and taking the twins into pre-installed baby seats.

“Ms. Vance,” Julian said, his voice trembling with controlled outrage. “Are you alright? Should I call the federal authorities?”

“No,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a icy whisper. She pulled out a secure satellite phone from her pocket. Her eyes were sharp, stripped of all vulnerability. “They wanted a war. Let’s give them an apocalypse.”

She dialed her Chief Financial Officer directly.

“Emergency asset freeze,” Evelyn commanded, her tone slicing through the quiet SUV. “Activate the Contingency Omega protocol. Freeze every corporate account associated with Grant Vale’s firm, Sterling-Vale Logistics. Revoke the master lease on the Greenwich Mansion immediately. Cut off all black-tier credit cards linked to the Vance Trust. Shut down Victoria’s charitable foundation accounts by midnight.”

On the other end, the CFO hesitated for a fraction of a second. “Ms. Vance, that will liquidate their liquidity in less than six hours. It will trigger immediate margin calls on Grant’s real estate portfolio.”

“Do it,” Evelyn snapped. “And notify the board that I am taking over the executive chair at 8:00 AM tomorrow. Let’s see how powerful Grant Vale feels when his empire evaporates before breakfast.”
